Walsh joins Pitt after spending the last eight seasons as Marshall’s head swimming and diving coach.

“After carefully evaluating what our program, current student-athletes and future recruits need, it became clear that Ian is exactly the right person for this role,” Kasprzak said. “As a sitting head coach, he brings a wealth of experience from leading programs in the American Conference to coaching at a Power 4 institution that finished second at the NCAA Championships. His track record includes coaching NCAA champions and athletes at every level of the sport, from club swimmers to the U.S. National Team. What stood out most throughout this process was not only his success in the pool, but his commitment to culture, leadership and accountability. Ian believes in developing great people first, and together we will create an environment where athletes are challenged, supported and held to the highest standards as both competitors and individuals.

“What he accomplished at Marshall speaks for itself, but the grace, professionalism and integrity he demonstrated through adversity were equally impressive. Ian knows how to make athletes faster because he has done it at the highest levels of our sport. More importantly, he knows how to lead with character, purpose and integrity. We could not be more excited to welcome Ian, Sarah and their family to the Pitt family.”

Walsh joins Pitt as part of the new leadership model under Kasprzak, in which dedicated head coaches lead each discipline while operating under a unified program vision. In this structure, he will work closely with Kasprzak and Pitt’s head diving coach, with each leader focused on developing their student-athletes within a cohesive and purposeful team environment.

As head swimming coach, Walsh will carry full responsibility for the direction and performance of Pitt’s men’s and women’s swimming program, overseeing all aspects of athlete development, training, competition preparation and recruiting.

“I would like to thank Director of Swimming & Diving <dfn>Katie Kasprzak</dfn>, Associate AD <dfn>Blaire Ford</dfn> and Athletic Director <dfn>Allen Greene</dfn> for their guidance through this process,” Walsh said. “From the first conversation, it was clear they wanted to create the best model to support high performance for their student-athletes, and the shared vision of this new structure will foster an environment where they can be their best in the pool, the classroom and within the Pittsburgh community. The University of Pittsburgh is an institution where you can balance elite academics and elite athletics. It is something the student-athletes here desire, and the program has shown it can be done through its rise in the ACC and NCAA ranks. I look forward to building upon the championship legacy of Pitt Swimming and Diving while recruiting men and women who want to be part of a championship culture here in Pittsburgh. Hail to Pitt.”

During eight seasons at Marshall, Walsh oversaw sustained success both in the pool and in the classroom. Under his direction, the program compiled 243 all-time top-10 performances, 76 individual podium finishes, 21 school records and 17 individual conference champions. The program earned CSCAA Scholar All-American status every semester since his arrival in 2018, including a 3.78 team GPA in fall 2025 that ranked seventh among all Division I swimming and diving programs nationally.

Walsh guided Marshall through three conference transitions and produced championship results in each league. In the Herd’s first season in the American Conference in 2025-26, Lauren McNamara became Marshall’s first American Conference individual champion, winning the 200 butterfly and earning selection to Team USA for the 2026 FISU America Games. During Marshall’s final Sun Belt Conference season in 2024-25, Kseniia Luniushina earned Sun Belt Swimmer of the Meet honors while setting school, meet and conference records in the 100 backstroke. Earlier, in Marshall’s inaugural Missouri Valley Conference campaign in 2022-23, Eszter Laban became the program’s first MVC individual champion by winning the 1650 freestyle.

More College News

Walsh began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Bloomsburg University before spending one year as head assistant at Albright College, where he helped the men’s and women’s programs combine for 13 school records and 19 individual or relay conference championships, with both teams capturing the 2013 Middle Atlantic Conference title. Walsh then joined the staff at Buffalo for the 2017-18 season, where the program posted its highest finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships, led the athletic department in team GPA in both semesters, and produced two conference titles and six All-MAC honorees.

Walsh also spent a season at California, helping guide the Golden Bears to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships behind four individual national champions and two relay national champions, and was named to the 2017-18 USA National Team coaching staff.

Walsh returns to the city of Pittsburgh after a stellar career at Duquesne University, where he set school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and swam on two record-setting medley relay teams. He won the Atlantic 10 title in the 100 breaststroke in 2009. He will be joined by his wife Sarah and four children Ella, Noah, Evelyn and Eli.

— The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Pitt Athletics.
