Caribe was among the group that qualified via the Maria Lenk Trophy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbda.org.br\/evento\/natacao\/40669\/campeonato-brasileiro-absoluto-de-natacao?tab=provas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Rio last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Caribe went 23.01 in the 50 fly, denying 46-year-old <strong>Nicholas Santos<\/strong> a chance to reach the meet. Santos was second in 23.19. Caribe easily beat <strong>Pedro Spajari<\/strong> in the 50 free final in 21.75, nearly four tenths up. Caribe won the 100 free in 47.60, more than a second ahead of the field for the sprinter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/brazils-gui-caribe-making-major-strides-on-road-to-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who is coming off a stellar NCAA season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a happier ending for 40-year-old <strong>Joao Gomes Jr.,<\/strong> who made the team in the 50 breaststroke. He went 27.15 to win the final and was 26.92 in prelims.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephan Steverink<\/strong> won the 400 free in 3:45.26, ahead of <strong>Artur Mello\u2019s<\/strong> 3:47.09. <strong>Guilherme da Costa<\/strong> was third in 3:48.03. Steverink won the 200 free in 1:46.32, he and <strong>Murilo Sartori\u2019s<\/strong> 1:46.53 getting to Pan Pacs (with <strong>Breno Correia<\/strong> third in 1:46.81). Steverink also won the 400 individual medley in a non-qualifying time of 4:16.10.<\/p>\n<p>Da Costa bested Steverink in the 800 free to reach Pan Pacs, the veteran going 7:50.24 to Steverink\u2019s 7:51.55. He won the 1,500 in 15:10.34, four seconds up on Steverink.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s strength was in the 200 free, which <strong>Maria Fernanda Costa<\/strong> won in 1:56.42 to get to the individual race. She\u2019ll race a relay there with <strong>Gabrielle Roncatto<\/strong> (1:58.64), <strong>Stephanie Balduccini<\/strong> (1:59.07) and <strong>Aline Rodrigues<\/strong> (1:59.56).<\/p>\n<p>Costa set a meet record in the 400 free, going 4:03.12, just .26 off her national record. She made a run at her new national record of 8:23.98 from April\u2019s Australian Open by winning that in a meet record 8:24.35.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beatriz Dizotti<\/strong> set a meet record in the 1,500 free to qualify. She went 16:04.63, within three seconds of her national record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Etienne Medeiros<\/strong> return to competition, the 35-year-old winning the 50 back in 28.43. It\u2019s her first meet on record since the Jose Finkel Trophy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldaquatics.com\/athletes\/1000951\/etiene-medeiros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the fall of 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among international swimmers, Spain\u2019s <strong>Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> had a big week. He won the 100 backstroke in 54.28 ahead of <strong>Guilherme Baseto\u2019s<\/strong> 54.34 but was second to Baseto\u2019s 24.80 in the 50 back. Gonzalez set a best time in finishing second in the 100 breast in 1:00.55 and won the 200 IM in 1:58.87. He dominated the 200 back in 1:57.60.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Volodymyr Lisovets<\/strong> of Ukraine was second in the 50 breast in 27.20 and third in the 100 breast in 1:00.69. Louisville\u2019s <strong>Tommy Bried<\/strong> was second in the 400 IM in 4:17.64. Lisovets was second and Bried third in the 200 breast, with 100 breast winner <strong>Caio Pumputis<\/strong> getting a second win.<\/p>\n<p>American <strong>Cadence Vincent<\/strong> won the 100 back in 1:00.68, a best time for her by .03 seconds. She also set a best time in the 100 free in 54.30 to best <strong>Giovana Medeiros<\/strong> (54.89) and Balduccini\u2019s 55.01, then won the 50 free in 24.86.
