{"id":643931,"date":"2026-05-26T18:33:40","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T01:33:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=643931"},"modified":"2026-05-26T18:33:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T01:33:40","slug":"ioc-president-kirsty-coventry-i-dont-believe-in-paying-athletes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-president-kirsty-coventry-i-dont-believe-in-paying-athletes\/","title":{"rendered":"IOC President Kirsty Coventry: \u2018I Don\u2019t Believe in Paying Athletes\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>IOC President Kirsty Coventry: \u2018I Don\u2019t Believe in Paying Athletes\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a visit to Oceania, new International Olympic Committee president <strong>Kirsty Coventry<\/strong> has reasserted that she doesn\u2019t believe in directly paying athletes on the Olympic stage.<\/p>\n<p>Coventry, an Olympic gold medalist swimmer from Zimbabwe and both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/double-olympic-champion-kirsty-coventry-elected-as-the-iocs-first-female-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first woman and first African to lead the IOC<\/a>, spoke to media in New Zealand during her tore there. She has pushed an agenda of making the Olympics \u201cfit for the future,\u201d though she\u2019s doing that with a pull quote that seems straight out of the <strong>Pierre de Coubertin<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/idrottsforum.org\/raysus_llewellyn-gleaves170223\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legacy of amateurism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coventry is against paying athletes directly, preferring to default to the current model of national sporting organizations that are taxpayer funded, sponsorships and self-funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe in paying athletes\u201d Coventry told <a href=\"https:\/\/sportnation.nz\/article\/i-dont-believe-in-paying-athletes-ioc-boss-on-the-olympics-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sport Nation in New Zealand<\/a>. \u201cI come from a small country, I came from a sport that doesn&#8217;t necessarily pay athletes very well and I still don&#8217;t think we should be paying athletes at the Olympic Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Coventry said she believes the IOC has, \u201cto find more ways to directly impact athletes and find ways to help them on their journey to becoming Olympians and while they\u2019re Olympians,\u201d direct prizes for gold medals doesn\u2019t seem to be it. She instead identified talent identification and resources \u2013 things like the Olympic solidarity fundings \u2013 and career transitions after the athletic careers to be more impactful.<\/p>\n<p>Coventry also weighed in on whether or the IOC should follow in the pathway of the American NCAAs in compensating athletes for the name, image and likeness (NIL) when they use their star power to advertise the Olympics. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/45467505\/judge-grants-final-approval-house-v-ncaa-settlement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Courts in the U.S. have decided that the NCAA needed to compensate those athletes<\/a>; the former Auburn swimmer\u2019s argument sounds like that of the NCAA\u2019s a decade ago, one that didn\u2019t stand up to legal rigor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, they get beautiful venues,\u201d she said. \u201cThey get beautiful villages. They get a beautiful experience. And all of that comes from the money that we raise.\u201d She also rose the possibility \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/did-house-v-ncaa-settlement-just-save-or-endanger-college-swimming-diving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">familiar to many from the NCAA debate<\/a> \u2013 that more sharing of money could lead to \u201chave not as many countries, we&#8217;d have not many sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s the Olympic Games,\u201d she concluded, \u201cand I don&#8217;t think the Olympic movement thinks that&#8217;s the Olympic Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read the <a
