For all the joys of a competitive championship meet, the leaders who bear the responsibility of running swim meets have understood that obtaining large scale coverage is an uphill battle.

There has been no shortage of attempts to make swimming more palatable to watch on a screen, most infamously with Division I swimming not having a B final for individual swims at the most recent NCAA Championships. Instituted as a potential solution to the problem non-Olympic swimming has, removing B finals was the latest response to the sport’s longest running problem: laypeople are typically uninterested in long swim meets.

Please Enhance Your Phone Screens

This is where the Enhanced Games come in. The notion of these games was to cut the fat of organized sport bureaucracy, and to deliver pure entertainment with no regard for drug rules or past norms of sport. The hook to build layperson interest was that the audience would be able to witness athletic feats that could now be achieved through the promotion of performance-enhancing drugs. Why should we watch? It’s because these athletes are quite literally, to use the euphemism, “built different” than a traditional athlete bound by rules and a code. This promise of expected excellence is what would help drive media attention and sponsors to follow.

Let this be well and understood. This is merely an examination of how the Enhanced Games attempted to make watching non-Olympic swimming on a screen to engage a general audience. Commentators far more versed in the nature of the Enhanced Games as an institution have and will make that reality quite clear.

If the Enhanced Games were aiming to deliver a product that was wholly unique from any other aspect of swimming, they certainly succeeded. Their triumph, however, was that they managed to fashion a meet that seemed as soulless and corporate as possible. Let’s take a look at an image from the men’s 100 butterfly to really see what the allusion is.

With a Little Help from My (3, not 7) Friends

Just off the bat, the pool itself felt wrong. A dainty four-lane pool that wouldn’t look out of place at a local LifeTime Fitness. It gave off the vibes of an NFL or NBA combine event. Athletes performed in short and simulated exercises, not real competition. This does not have the majesty or the authority of a swim meet. This goes with the deck area as well. Drab, dull, lifeless; every element feels agonized over for dozens of hours in a board room.

There were no hallmarks of what makes the swim meet environment intoxicating for those who love to watch swimming. For a layperson, it felt like a fast-food version of a swim meet. It was easily digestible and designed to be of mass appeal. Even if mass appeal here was more akin to the mass appeal of a PT Barnum attraction. Fewer swimmers, fewer lanes, fewer distractions beyond the four important people. It’s swimming for someone with a short attention span who enjoys drab and corporate color.

Lights! Camera (Out of Focus); Excitement (?)

This isn’t even discussing the strange technical missteps and choices made in the presentation of the meet. Kristian Gkolomeev’s 50 freestyle found no shortage of internet conspiracy theories surrounding its validity from a pure stopwatch standpoint. Two possibilities jump to the forefront of my mind. One, the cameras were out of sync with the clock – quite the feat for a company throwing out $250,000 per event like it was candy. Or two, the Enhanced Games’ technical operation wanted to obtain an enhanced world record no matter what. What better way to proclaim the superiority of the event and their mission? Touch pads are typically better managed at U-8 outdoor summer club meets. I find the pathetic attempts to validate their endeavor through technical chicanery to be an embarrassment to the sport.

Buyer’s Remorse

Watching the Enhanced Games was a strange phenomenon. It was as if AI was fed the typical conditions of a swim meet and spat out a palatable version of it for mass consumption. If this is the new direction of swimming from a presentation standpoint, I would like some more thought to be invested into the production. Let’s see if we can enhance the conditions of watching swimming to a level matching the athletes. Or, you could try and present swimming like its swimming. If the FDA outlaws good swim presentation in the coming months, maybe we can get that for the second Enhanced Games.

How the Enhanced Games Tried – and Failed – to Make Swimming Spectacle It’s no secret that swimming is a once-every-four-years event for most people.
