Oliver Dawson Breaks Two Canadian Records at AP Race London; Provides Relay Hope<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the first time since 2012, a long-course Canadian national record in a breaststroke event has been broken. Eighteen-year-old Oliver Dawson<\/strong> put on a record-breaking display at the 2026 AP Race London International swim meet in both the 50-meter and 100 breaststroke events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dawson started the meet with the 50 breaststroke, where he took down the super-suited record, previously set by Scott Dickens<\/strong> in 2009. The time of 27.29 set by Dawson shaved .16 off Dickens’ record. Dawson\u2019s Canadian-record time was from the preliminary session. The finals session led him to a slight add of 27.40, ultimately putting him in fourth place. A time of 27.29 does not just put him into the top position in Canadian Swimming, but it also gives him a high rank in the world junior rankings. Dawson\u2019s time from the weekend leaves him just three tenths off the current World Junior Record held by Jan Malte Grafe<\/strong> in 26.95. That record will be within striking range come the international competitions of the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The records did not stop there for Dawson, who twice broke the Canadian record in the 100 breaststroke. In prelims, he went 59.55 to take three tenths off the former record held by Dickens from the 2012 London Olympics. In the finals session, Dawson finished second in 59.33, trailing only world-record holder Adam Peaty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Compared to Dickens’ record from 2012, Dawson took the race out hard, touching in 27.87 at the 50-meter mark, while Dickens touched in 28.04. He closed the race in 31.46, slightly slower than his morning swim, but still three tenths faster than Dickens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dawson Came Close to a Third Record<\/h3>\n

To close the meet, Dawson came within a tenth of his third Canadian record in as many days. He posted a 2:08.93 in the 200 breaststroke, just .09 off the record of Mike Brown<\/strong> from the 2008 Olympic Games. Notably, Dawson came back in a blazing 32.64 in the final 50, a full second faster than Brown in 2008. He will still have plenty of chances this summer to get this record, specifically at the Canadian Trials as well as the Commonwealth Games.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Positive for Canada’s Medley Relay<\/h3>\n

The record swims by Dawson do not just help himself, but will bolster Canada’s medley relay. At the 2025 World Championships, Canada finished fifth in the 400 medley relay with a Canadian-record time of 3:29.75. In that relay, Dawson split a 59.99, six-tenths slower than the time he swam at the AP meet. With a relay takeover, Dawson\u2019s split could get down to the 58.5-58.9 range. A 1-1.5-second drop in the relay would put Canada in medal contention. The United States finished third at Worlds in a time of 3:28.62.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada has routinely struggled to find a world-class breaststroker for their medley relays. With Dawson only 18, Canada could have finally found their missing piece in creating a potential medal-winning relay come the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Being so young leaves him with a lot of room for improvement, and the Indiana University commit will find himself training with an elite breaststroke group next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The loss of Ilya Kharun<\/strong>, who is changing his sporting nationality to the United States, will leave Canada with a major void to fill, and it likely will mean the move of Josh Liendo<\/strong> to butterfly from freestyle. But if Canada can locate a reliable freestyle leg, the emergence of Dawson could put Canada in the medal discussion for 2028.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
