The mark was Mijatovic’s first after aging up after he previously demolished almost every distance mark in the 15-16 division. Indeed, Mijatovic crushed the field in the 16-lap event while lowering his own personal best time, although it was not enough for another NAG mark.

Mijatovic finished 13 seconds clear of the field in 7:47.08, eclipsing his most recent best time of 7:48.28 from late last year. Mijatovic previously finished second in the event at last year’s U.S. Nationals, but he did not swim fast enough to qualify for the World Championships. That is no longer a concern; this latest effort would have been quick enough to reach the global final in 2025 and place sixth in the final.

Finishing well behind in second place was Ethan Ekk, who overtook Juan Vallmitjana on the final length.
