The final horn sounded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"1040\"><strong>California\u2019s<\/strong> last push had come up short. <strong>USC<\/strong> players were already sprinting toward each other in the water at <strong>UC San Diego<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 NCAA Women\u2019s Water Polo Championship belonged to The Women of Troy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1064\"><strong>Meghan McAninch<\/strong> froze.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1303\">\u201cI honestly didn\u2019t know how to react,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cI didn\u2019t plan ahead. We were in the water when the horn blew, and remember the girl that was guarding me kind of just started floating away. I was like, \u2018Do I swim to my teammates?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1305\" data-end=\"1397\">This video shows McAninch splashing in the water after the final horn. font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DXnmzs0CH4H\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A post shared by USC Trojans (@usc_athletics)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1469\">\u201cI swear I blacked out because I do not remember it at all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1471\" data-end=\"1511\">The moment had been years in the making.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1764\">USC had just beaten Cal, 10-9, to win the NCAA women\u2019s water polo championship.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anna-reed-backstops-usc-to-womens-water-polo-national-title-over-cal\/\"><strong>Anna Reed<\/strong>\u00a0 delivered a monster game in goal<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emily Ausmus<\/strong>\u00a0helped lead the Trojans as a sophomore captain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Casey Moon<\/strong> had his first national title as USC Head Coach.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"1794\">McAninch had something else.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1796\" data-end=\"1815\">She had a comeback.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1817\" data-end=\"2068\">\u201cWinning a national championship has been, besides going to USC water polo, my number one goal my entire life,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cJust hearing the buzzer go off and knowing that we finally did it, it was the most satisfying feeling in the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2190\">Swimming World\u2019s championship-game recap captured the final score, Reed\u2019s saves and the Trojans\u2019 late stand against Cal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2192\" data-end=\"2233\">McAninch\u2019s story starts before the final.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2235\" data-end=\"2478\">It starts with two years of NCAA pain. Then moves through Brazil, <strong>Team USA<\/strong>, a torn MCL, a ruptured eardrum, a dislocated knee, months of rehab and the strange place an injured athlete finds herself when the game she loves is suddenly taken away.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2536\">How did it end? It was more about us and what we were going to do and our mindset to make it to that last Sunday of play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3476\" data-end=\"3588\">A year earlier, the Trojans had learned what it felt like to stand one game from the title and leave without it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3590\" data-end=\"3828\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t really know the feeling of being in a national championship game,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know the feeling of being so close but getting it taken from you. That feeling of losing last year was really what fueled most of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3830\" data-end=\"3894\">That lesson became part of the message to USC\u2019s younger players.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3896\" data-end=\"4065\">\u201cWe were trying to relay that message to our freshmen all year,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to take it from them. They\u2019re not going to take it from us this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"7c53iz\" data-start=\"4067\" data-end=\"4108\">The Hard Way Back<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4110\" data-end=\"4191\">Before USC could finish its climb, McAninch had to get herself back in the water.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4193\" data-end=\"4464\">The hardest stretch came after playing for <strong>Team USA<\/strong> in Brazil. McAninch tore her MCL and ruptured her eardrum, then returned to school facing a long recovery. Just as she was supposed to come back from the MCL injury in her right knee, she fully dislocated her left knee.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4466\" data-end=\"4567\">\u201cIt was the worst feeling in the world. That was definitely a low for me this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4569\" data-end=\"4778\">No athlete wants the season to pause like that. The team keeps practicing. Games keep coming. Roles keep evolving. Far from it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5809\" data-end=\"6055\">USC plays its own system. Freshmen have to learn where to move, how to read situations, how the five-on-six and six-on-five should look and where the details matter. McAninch could not play, but she could still see the game. She could still help.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6057\" data-end=\"6176\">\u201cI still felt included in the team,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cI still felt like I could help, even though I wasn\u2019t in the pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6178\" data-end=\"6355\">The injury gave younger players a different view of her. They saw McAninch not only as a player, but as someone who understood the system and cared enough to help them learn it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6357\" data-end=\"6498\">\u201cI think it helped them gain a lot of trust in me,\u201d McAninch said, \u201cbecause they could see I knew what I was talking about out of the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6500\" data-end=\"6550\">One of the quieter characteristics of the comeback kid.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6552\" data-end=\"6755\">McAninch did not choose the injury. Now she needed to regroup. Time away from the water gave her a wider view of her team, a different connection with younger players and a deeper understanding of leadership.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6757\" data-end=\"6819\">Sometimes the athlete changes the role. Sometimes the role changes the athlete.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6821\" data-end=\"6866\">McAninch found a way to make her new role matter.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"psp6o1\" data-start=\"6868\" data-end=\"6896\">Two Comeback Stories<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6898\" data-end=\"6937\">McAninch\u2019s season was a comeback story.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6939\" data-end=\"6952\">So was USC\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6954\" data-end=\"7132\">The Trojans had talent. Plenty of speed. Players who could score, defend big moments. Yet early in the season, McAninch saw the team was not fully connected.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7134\" data-end=\"7314\">\u201cWe were having a lot of issues with our team culture at the start of the season,\u201d she said. \u201cWe weren\u2019t really playing the way that we usually would, which is for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7344\" data-end=\"7474\">Championship teams are not built only on talent. They are built on trust. USC had to rebuild some of that trust during this season.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7476\" data-end=\"7604\">\u201cA lot of people just weren\u2019t having fun,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWhich was such a bummer because we play water polo because it\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7606\" data-end=\"7645\">So the players met without the coaches. The Trojans arrived as a team that had gone through hard internal work, said what needed to be said and found each other again.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8431\" data-end=\"8572\">\u201cEveryone\u2019s talented, everyone\u2019s a hard worker, everyone deserves to win a national championship,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cBut for us, we earned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8574\" data-end=\"8627\">Coach Casey Moon gave the players room to own that process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8629\" data-end=\"8741\">\u201cI think he gave us a lot more freedom this year to run the team ourselves,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWhich was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8743\" data-end=\"8847\">That freedom did not mean USC lacked structure. It meant the players had ownership inside the structure.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1nspihf\" data-start=\"8878\" data-end=\"8914\">Playing Free and Staying Loose<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"8916\" data-end=\"9063\">After USC beat Cal, Moon talked about a young team that stayed loose. The Trojans brought a stereo to the pool deck. They danced. Laughed. Flashed big smiles. Played with joy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9090\" data-end=\"9134\">It was right there on display. A culture USC had fought to create.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9136\" data-end=\"9296\">McAninch said the team made a conscious decision to have fun again, recognizing that playing tight had already cost them enough.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9298\" data-end=\"9528\">\u201cWe all just decided, why? We\u2019re just going to have fun,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWho cares about the scoreboard at the end of the day? Let\u2019s just make this season fun so we can remember it as the best season of our lives no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9562\" data-end=\"9668\">Fun does not mean careless. Joy does not mean soft. Playing free does not mean playing without discipline.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9670\" data-end=\"9705\">McAninch had to learn that herself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9707\" data-end=\"9784\">\u201cI used to get super, super nervous before games and during games,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9786\" data-end=\"9965\">So she found small ways to break the pressure. Before games, she would look at teammate <strong>Rachel Gazzaniga<\/strong> and say something random, anything that had nothing to do with water polo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9967\" data-end=\"10075\">\u201cIt kind of kicked us out of the serious, angry water polo mindset and grounded us a little,\u201d McAninch said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10077\" data-end=\"10126\">A minute detail says a lot about USC\u2019s season.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10128\" data-end=\"10196\">The Women of Troy did not ignore pressure. They learned how to release it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10198\" data-end=\"10347\">\u201cThere was a fine line between goofy and not being serious, and having fun playing with joy,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cI think we rode that line really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10349\" data-end=\"10534\">Emily Ausmus said after the game that she reminded teammates to smile, play for each other and play water polo. McAninch did not pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10849\" data-end=\"10964\">\u201cHonestly, it was a really bad game for us,\u201d she said. \u201cAnna played amazing. As a team, we did not play very well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10966\" data-end=\"11120\">Cal made USC uncomfortable. The Golden Bears had already knocked off Stanford. USC, like a lot of people, had not expected Cal to be waiting in the final.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11122\" data-end=\"11245\">\u201cWe were jaws on the floor when we heard about the other games,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t scout Cal at all for the final.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11247\" data-end=\"11380\">Coach Moon and his team had to trust their preparation, work their system, and a rebuilt culture.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11382\" data-end=\"11572\">\u201cIn a championship like that, neither team plays their best game,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWe talked about being the team that makes the least mistakes, and that was the team that was going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11574\" data-end=\"11675\">McAninch scored one of USC\u2019s key goals in the final. She remembers the feeling more than the details.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11677\" data-end=\"11802\">\u201cI remember getting the ball and being like, \u2018All right, let\u2019s just do it,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cThere were really no other thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11825\" data-end=\"11920\">Last year, USC had reached the final and tightened. This year, the Trojans attacked the moment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11922\" data-end=\"12040\">\u201cIn our final last year, we played not to lose,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cThis year, we played to win. That was the big shift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12075\" data-end=\"12203\">Playing not to lose makes everything smaller. Playing to win opens the game back up. USC had felt both sides of that difference.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12205\" data-end=\"12242\">This time, the Trojans went after it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12244\" data-end=\"12310\">\u201cIt was all or nothing,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cWe\u2019re just going for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"nkg4ku\" data-start=\"12312\" data-end=\"12345\">Fastest Team in the Nation<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"12390\" data-end=\"12448\">McAninch believes the Trojans\u2019 speed helped separate them.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12450\" data-end=\"12551\">\u201cI think we\u2019re the fastest team in the nation,\u201d she said. \u201cWe move really well up and down the pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12553\" data-end=\"12708\">Speed fits the way women\u2019s water polo is evolving. Newer rules have opened the game, created more attacking space and led to higher-scoring games.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12710\" data-end=\"12877\">\u201cYou can tell based on the scores now in water polo games,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cThey\u2019re so much higher scoring than they have been in the past because of these new rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12879\" data-end=\"12923\">USC was built for that version of the sport.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12925\" data-end=\"13032\">Faster swimmers. Ready to move. Attack. Play fast in transition without losing connection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13034\" data-end=\"13142\">Women\u2019s water polo is faster, sharper and more dynamic than ever. USC\u2019s championship run showed exactly why.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1jr0i65\" data-start=\"13144\" data-end=\"13162\">A Family Dynamic<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"13164\" data-end=\"13241\">When McAninch finally saw her parents after the game, the tears came quickly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13243\" data-end=\"13262\">Of course they did.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13264\" data-end=\"13391\">They had been there for swimming, water polo, USC, Team USA, Brazil, the injuries, the rehab, the frustration and the comeback.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13393\" data-end=\"13581\">\u201cGetting to celebrate with them was so special because they won that just as much as I did,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cThey were on that team with me too, and they were on that journey with me too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13583\" data-end=\"13622\">That is how families experience sports.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13624\" data-end=\"13678\">Not in the pool, but in the journey.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13680\" data-end=\"13881\">\u201cThey\u2019ve always supported me in chasing my dreams,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cThis literally was one of my biggest dreams of my entire life, to win a national championship. They know how much work goes into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13883\" data-end=\"13923\">Tears were not only about the title. They were about everything behind it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13964\" data-end=\"14087\">\u201cI have such a supportive family, and I\u2019m so lucky that I have them,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cThey have been so, so amazing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"xjyxxi\" data-start=\"14089\" data-end=\"14120\">A Lesson Beyond Water Polo<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"14122\" data-end=\"14194\">A national championship can make everything look clean from the outside.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14196\" data-end=\"14317\">USC beat Cal, 10-9. The Trojans celebrated. McAninch sprinted to her teammates. Instant memories were made. Photos were taken. The NCAA Championship Trophy was lifted.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14319\" data-end=\"14358\">Yet the underlying victories were deeper, and in mysterious ways much richer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14360\" data-end=\"14703\">McAninch had to lose water polo for awhile to understand how much she loved it. USC had to lose a final to understand themselves better. To work through injuries, pressure, hard conversations, culture issues and the weight of last year\u2019s disappointment before they could arrive at UC San Diego ready for the moment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14705\" data-end=\"14762\">McAninch\u2019s lesson was not complicated, but it was clearly earned.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14764\" data-end=\"14980\">When something matters, it may not come right away. Healing takes time. Leadership can happen from the pool deck. Trust can grow during the hard parts. Playing free does not mean playing soft. Joy can be part of the experience.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"14982\" data-end=\"15084\">For USC, the breakthrough came when the Trojans stopped protecting the dream and started attacking it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15086\" data-end=\"15204\">\u201cIn our final last year, we played not to lose,\u201d McAninch said. \u201cThis year, we played to win. That was the big shift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15206\" data-end=\"15237\">A lesson that applies beyond water polo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15239\" data-end=\"15495\">In sports, work, relationships and life, people often get so close to something they want that they start guarding against losing it. The better answer is usually the harder one: reset, trust the people around you, remember why you started and go after it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15497\" data-end=\"15510\">USC did that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15512\" data-end=\"15530\">McAninch did that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"15532\" data-end=\"15663\">By the time the horn sounded, she did not have a speech ready. She did not have the perfect reaction planned.
