This year, for example, marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, where the United States men&#8217;s swim team won 12 of the 13 events and etched a legacy as one of the greatest teams &#8211; perhaps the greatest &#8211; the sport has seen.<\/p>\n<p>In a few months, it will be the 16th anniversary of <strong>Katie Ledecky&#8217;s<\/strong> last defeat in the 1500-meter freestyle. According to NBC Sports&#8217; <strong>Nick Zaccardi<\/strong>, who routinely unearths exceptional statistical data, Ledecky last lost the 1500 freestyle at the 2010 Potomac Valley Championships, which were held in July in Maryland. Ledecky was a 13-year-old at the time, and was beaten to the wall by 17-year-old <strong>Kaitlin Pawlowicz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Since that day, Ledecky has been untouchable in the 1500 freestyle while drafting the greatest career ever produced by a female swimmer. Over the weekend, Ledecky won the 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle at the Fort Lauderdale Open, the longer event in the fifth-fastest time of her career. Now 29 years old, the American superstar is moving toward the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, which would be her fifth Games.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a look at Ledecky&#8217;s dominance in the 1500 freestyle during her remarkable winning streak:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ledecky owns the world record at 15:20.48, posted in 2018 at the Indianapolis stop of the Pro Swim Series. That mark is 11.31 seconds faster than the No. 2 performer in history, Italian <strong>Simona Quadarella<\/strong> (15:31.79). More, Ledecky is 20.93 seconds faster than the No. 2 American of all-time, Olympic silver medalist <strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong> (15:41.41).<\/li>\n<li>Ledecky is the only woman to win Olympic gold in the 1500 freestyle, having won the inaugural title at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, and repeating at the 2024 Games in Paris.<\/li>\n<li>The American owns the 12-fastest times in history and 27 of the 28-fastest performances.<\/li>\n<li>Ledecky is a six-time world champion in the 1500 freestyle. She captured her first title in 2013 in Barcelona, and claimed additional crowns in 2015, 2017, 2022, 2023 and 2025.
