{"id":643007,"date":"2026-05-03T05:09:33","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T12:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=643007"},"modified":"2026-05-03T05:09:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T12:09:33","slug":"michael-phelps-jalen-rose-awarded-honorary-degrees-from-university-of-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-jalen-rose-awarded-honorary-degrees-from-university-of-michigan\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Phelps, Jalen Rose Awarded Honorary Degrees From University of Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Michael Phelps, Jalen Rose Awarded Honorary Degrees From University of Michigan<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Olympic champion swimmer <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Michigan on Saturday, May 2.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps and former Fab Five basketball player <strong>Jalen Rose<\/strong> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2026\/05\/02\/jalen-rose-bsketball-president-elect-syverud-michigan-commencement\/89879507007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">part of a group<\/a> that got Michigan to its one millionth degree given out since the university started in 1845.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps attended the University of Michigan from 2004-08 but did not compete for the swim team since he was already a professional. His coach, <strong>Bob Bowman<\/strong>, was the Michigan head coach at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps claimed 28 Olympic medals and a record 23 gold during his career, and is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-headed-for-induction-into-international-swimming-hall-of-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Swimming Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 10,000 students and 60,000 guests filled Michigan Stadium Saturday morning for the commencement ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan conferred honorary degrees to Rose, Phelps, Nobel laureate <strong>Shirin Ebadi<\/strong>, engineer <strong>Ingeborg Hochmair<\/strong>, Regent Emeritus<strong> Ron Weiser<\/strong> and <strong>Kent Syverud<\/strong>, who was going to become the new president of the university before being diagnosed with brain cancer in April.<\/p>\n<p>Rose received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and was the ceremony&#8217;s keynote speaker.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re going to do so many amazing things,&#8221; Rose told the graduates. &#8220;As a matter of fact, one of you might hire me one day. That&#8217;s the Michigan way.
