Among them, <strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> and <strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> both set themselves up to make finals in two events.<\/p>\n<p>The morning action:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gomotionapp.com\/team\/fgflac\/page\/calendar#\/team-events\/upcoming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Information Page\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gomotionapp.com\/fgflac\/UserFiles\/File\/Fort%20Lauderdale%20Open\/fort-lauderdale-open-thursday-prelims-heatsheet_038542.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thursday Morning Heat Sheets<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fort-lauderdale-open-loaded-field-led-by-returning-world-record-setters-ledecky-walsh-psych-sheets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Lauderdale Open Preview\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-rips-fifth-fastest-time-in-history-in-1500-freestyle-at-fort-lauderdale-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Lauderdale Open Night 1 Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Women\u2019s 100 freestyle<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> led the way in the 100 free in a very Virginia top half of the final. Walsh went 53.64, the top seed by .05 seconds over <strong>Anna Moesch. Kate Douglass<\/strong> was third in 54.04.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> finished fourth in 54.41, .02 up on Texas teammate <strong>Erin Gemmell,<\/strong> with fellow Longhorn <strong>Nikolett Padar<\/strong> sixth. <strong>Rylee Erisman<\/strong> and <strong>Erika Pelaez<\/strong> round up the sub-55 times for the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lily King<\/strong> of NC State was ninth, ahead of <strong>Claire Curzan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Men\u2019s 100 freestyle<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Chris Guiliano<\/strong> led the way in the men\u2019s 100 free with a time of 48.48. Second was a tie between Ohio State\u2019s <strong>Tomas Navikonis<\/strong> and <strong>Patrick Sammon<\/strong> in 48.90. Dylan Carter was fourth, ahead of <strong>Josh Liendo<\/strong> (49.51) and <strong>Luke Hobson<\/strong> (49.66). <strong>Jerry Fox<\/strong> and <strong>Ruslan Gaziev<\/strong> round out the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shaine Casas<\/strong> was ninth in 49.85, with <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> 10th in 49.90. <strong>Ilya Kharun<\/strong> finished 13th in 50.41.<\/p>\n<h4>Women\u2019s 100 breaststroke<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Mona McSharry<\/strong> claimed the top seed in finals, the Irishwoman going 1:07.36 to win by .01 over NC State\u2019s <strong>Eneli Jefimova. Kate Douglass<\/strong> was third in 1:07.96, with <strong>Emma Weber<\/strong> following in 1:08.00.<\/p>\n<p>There was quite a gap back to <strong>Sophia Umstead<\/strong> of Virginia, who nonetheless set a best time in 1:09.68. <strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> was sixth, with 48-year-old <strong>Gabby Rose<\/strong> in seventh.<\/p>\n<h4>Men\u2019s 100 breaststroke<\/h4>\n<p>A thinner men\u2019s breaststroke field led to <strong>Jack Kelly<\/strong> of NYAC leading the way in 1:00.98. He was the first choice by .05 seconds over <strong>Ian Call.<\/strong> There was more than a second back to <strong>Hubert Kos,<\/strong> dipping his toe into breaststroke with a 1:02.47. Fourth place went to <strong>Pavel Romanov,<\/strong> the 32-year-old Russian going 1:02.59.<\/p>\n<h4>Women\u2019s 50 backstroke<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Isabelle Stadden<\/strong> led the way with a time of 27.34. She bested <strong>Katharine Berkoff,<\/strong> who had a 100 free on her legs earlier in the session, with a 27.78. NC State\u2019s <strong>Erika Pelaez<\/strong> was third in 28.49. <strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> gave it a go and was fourth in 28.54, with <strong>Claire Curzan<\/strong> fifth.<\/p>\n<p>Bermuda international <strong>Emma Harvey<\/strong> and American <strong>Phoebe Bacon<\/strong> rounded up the top seven, Bacon going 29.01.<\/p>\n<h4>Men\u2019s 50 backstroke<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Finn Harland<\/strong> set the quickest time in prelims of the 50 back, his 25.15 edging <strong>Hubert Kos<\/strong>\u00a0by .03 seconds in 25.18. It was about a tenth back to <strong>Shaine Casas<\/strong> in 25.27 for third.<\/p>\n<p>Estonian international <strong>Ralf Tribuntsov<\/strong> finished fourth in 25.61, edging <strong>Jack Aikins<\/strong> by .05 and <strong>Daniel Zaitsev<\/strong> by .06.<\/p>\n<h4>Women\u2019s 200 butterfly<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Regan Smith<\/strong>, in her only event of the morning, went 2:06.77 to easily set the pace. <strong>Tess Howley<\/strong> was a distant second in 2:09.71. <strong>Lindsay Looney<\/strong> was third in 2:11.22, then <strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> in 2:12.81.<\/p>\n<p>In her first of two swims on the morning, <strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong> went 2:15.76 to finish 11th.<\/p>\n<h4>Men\u2019s 200 butterfly<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> led the way with a time of 1:56.80 that was a half-second clear of the field. <strong>Carson Foster<\/strong> was second in 1:57.36, then <strong>Mitchell Schott<\/strong> followed in 1:59.08. <strong>Arthur Balva<\/strong> was the only other swimmer to break two minutes at 1:59.43, then a gap back to fifth-placed <strong>Grant Sanders<\/strong> in 2:02.66.<\/p>\n<h4>Women\u2019s 400 freestyle<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> claimed the first-round battle with <strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> in the 400 free. Fresh off her stellar 1,500 free on Wednesday night, Ledecky went 4:06.22 to lead the field by nearly three seconds. McIntosh was second in 4:09.22.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them, <strong>Erin Gemmell<\/strong> went 4:09.80 for second, .09 up on <strong>Emma Weyant.<\/strong> Fifth was Virginia\u2019s <strong>Cavan Gormsen<\/strong> in 4:11.53, her time .06 up on <strong>Nikolett Padar. Audrey Derivaux<\/strong> was seventh in 4:15.43, leading a crowd of 4:15s that included <strong>Rylee Erisman<\/strong> in eighth, <strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong> in 10th and <strong>Madi Mintenko<\/strong> in 11th.<\/p>\n<h4>Men\u2019s 400 freestyle<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Luke Hobson<\/strong> backed up his quick 100 free by leading the way in the 400 free in 3:53.99. He was .09 up on <strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong> to grab the top seed.
