OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma, December 20. FORMER USC star Michala Kwasny and former Texas standout Neil Walker each won two events today, the third day of competition at the Kerr-McGee Elite Pro-Am meet in Oklahoma City. But the outstanding performance of the day — and of the meet thus far — was Chad Carvin's 4:14.85 in the 500 yard free.<\/p>\n
Women's Events<\/b>
\nKwasny, swimming for NOVA, began the day with an impressive win in the 200 IM, as she just out-touched Texas senior Tanica Jamison, 1:58.74 to 1:58.78. The ex-Trojan barely missed breaking Jenny Thompson's meet record of 1:58.62 set five years ago.<\/p>\n
Kwasny was only a second off her PR of 1:57.60 from the 2001 NCAAs while Jamison easily swaam her lifetime best. Caroline Bruce, the top qualifier at 2:02.85, finished third in 2:00.77.<\/p>\n
Colleen Lanne, NOVA, won her second event of the meet, just nipping 16 year-old Dana Vollmer in the 50 free, 22.63 to 22.67. Erin Phenix, a 2000 Olympian, was third in 22.83. Finishing 11th was Brigitte Heuer, at 43, the oldest competitor here. Heuer swam a PR 24.28.<\/p>\n
Caroline Bruce picked up her second gold medal of the meet, again defeating 2000 Olympian Staciana Stitts. This time the 17 year-old's win came in the 200 breast, where she clocked 2:11.95 to the Cal senior's 2:13.99.<\/p>\n
Tanica Jamison, who is having a terrific meet, swam a PR 54.28 to take the 100 yard backstroke with ease. Her Texas Aquatics teammate, Susan Woessner, was second in 55.09 followed, in a surprise, by Dana Vollmer at 55.29.<\/p>\n
Kwasny took her second gold of the day, but again it did not come easy.
\nIn the 500 free, the former USC All-American out-duelled Codie Hansen, 17, and Lanne, winner of the 200 free yesterday. At the wall it was Kwasny, 4:47.54; Hansen, 4:48.98; and Lanne, 4:49.29.<\/p>\n
Wichita won the 400 medley relay in 3:50.82.<\/p>\n
Men's Events<\/b>
\nNate Dusing, who holds the American record in the 200 IM at 1:42.85, won that event here in a more modest 1:48.51. James Wike, second in the 400 IM yesterday, was a much closer second today, touching in 1:49.25.<\/p>\n
Neil Walker swam the only sub-20 seconds 50 yards tonight for the win with a time of 19.87. NOVA's Gabe Woodward was second in 20.07.<\/p>\n
Dave Denniston, who won the 100 breast yesterday in 53.90, glided to victory today in the 200 breast in 1:56.78. Val Kalmikovs was almost four seconds behind at 2:00.46.<\/p>\n
The Old Guys swept the 100 fly, led by Walker at 47.14, more than a second off his meet record of 45.89. Dusing was second in 48.22, with Wike earning bronze in 48.97.<\/p>\n
Carvin carved out his third gold medal of the meet — he had won the 1000 free on opening night and the 400 IM yesterday — by turning in the best performance of the meet while winning the 400 free in 4:14.85. The time shattered Josh Davis' meet mark of 4:17.36 from 1998.<\/p>\n
To finish the meet for this day, SMU won the men's 400 medley relay in a aMR 3:23.39, taaking almost three seconds off the previous standard of 3:26.12 by Circle C last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
