She came closest on her first attempt, at the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021. In that final, Wood turned in third place with 50 meters remaining, but American <strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> surged on the freestyle leg to win bronze by 0.11.<\/p>\n<p>Wood returned to the Olympic final three years later and again at last year&#8217;s World Championships but with no hardware to show. However, she did pick up a relay medal at the February 2024 World Championships before claiming three podium finishes at the Short Course World Championships later that year. Two of those medals came in individual events, the 200 and 400 IM.<\/p>\n<p>Now, though, Wood finds herself atop the world rankings as she prepares to push for medals at this summer&#8217;s Commonwealth Games and European Championships. Wood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/filip-nowacki-and-abbie-wood-collect-titles-at-aquatics-gb-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">topped the 200 IM<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/results.swimming.org\/swimming\/results\/2026\/agbchamps\/?page=lastresult\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aquatics GB Championships<\/a> in 2:08.17, four hundredths better than Olympic champion\u00a0<strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> as the top swimmer in the world this year. Moreover, Wood easily cleared her previous best time of 2:08.85, and she became the 15th-fastest performer in history in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Any performance in the 2:08-low range will play at a major competition. The time was faster than the silver-medal-winning effort from the 2025 World Championships, and it would have been good enough for a podium finish in every previous major final except for the Paris Games. There are six active swimmers who have beaten that time: McIntosh, Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong>, Americans\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yu Zidi<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Yi Yiting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If she can maintain that speed or perhaps break into the 2:07s, the 27-year-old Wood will be in line for the most prolific year of her career thus far.
