A lack of respect surrounded these non-Olympic events, which were added to the World Championships program in 2001, but did not carry the same weight as their traditional counterparts. Eventually, the 800 freestyle was added to the Olympic program, beginning with the 2020 Tokyo Games, and the stroke sprints will make their Olympic debuts at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>These days, the events are appreciated, welcomed due to a greater understanding of their demands. While the stroke 50s are a true testament of speed, the 800 freestyle is the bridge between the 400 freestyle and 1500 freestyle. For his part, Australian distance legend <strong>Grant Hackett<\/strong> acknowledged the 800 freestyle as a meaningful event before that consideration was the norm. For proof, let&#8217;s take a trip back to the 2005 World Championships in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>One year after the Olympic Games in Athens, the 2005 World Champs offered a shift in the sport&#8217;s global landscape. For starters, <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/honoree\/honoree-ian-thorpe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ian Thorpe<\/strong><\/a> was absent, starting what would become his retirement. Meanwhile, <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> opted to follow his eight-medal haul from Greece by altering his schedule. Out went the 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly and in came the 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>A peak-form Hackett took advantage of the opportunity to reign as the sport&#8217;s premier performer for the year. In Montreal, Hackett mined gold in the 400 freestyle (3:42.91) and 1500 freestyle (14:42.58), posting impressive times in the process. But what he managed in the 800 freestyle was brilliant, as Hackett delivered a world record of 7:38.65 and defeated American <strong>Larsen Jensen<\/strong>, the silver medalist, by 6.98 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the 2005 World Champs, the legendary Thorpe was the world-record holder in the 800 freestyle. As part of his awe-inspiring performance at the 2001 World Championships, where he won six gold medals and set three individual world records, Thorpe stormed to a mark of 7:39.16, an effort that sliced more than two seconds from his previous global standard. Hackett had an up-close view of Thorpe&#8217;s swim, as he clocked 7:40.34 &#8211; under the prior world record &#8211; for the silver medal.<\/p>\n<p>In Montreal, Hackett went after Thorpe&#8217;s world record with ferocity, opening with a split of 54.38 for the first 100 meters, putting him nearly two seconds ahead of Jensen. He went through the 200-meter mark at 1:51.89 and made the halfway turn in 3:47.17, a time that would have placed sixth in the final of the 400 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Through 600 meters, Hackett was more than five seconds under the world-record pace of Thorpe and while the gap shrunk over the final four laps, the Aussie had plenty of cushion to ensure he would get the global standard. At the touch, Hackett looked to the scoreboard and yelled, &#8220;Yeah.&#8221; The gold was Hackett&#8217;s 15th medal in World Championships competition, which was a record at the time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was a fast world record, and Ian is one of the greatest swimmers of all-time,&#8221; Hackett said after the race. &#8220;Any record is great, but to get one of Ian&#8217;s records is a little more satisfying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To put Hackett&#8217;s world record in further perspective, his effort from two decades ago would have earned the silver medal at last summer&#8217;s World Championships and would have claimed the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Great Races: When Grant Hackett
