{"id":641969,"date":"2026-04-17T10:18:04","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T17:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=641969"},"modified":"2026-04-17T10:18:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T17:18:04","slug":"pieter-coetze-adds-another-commonwealth-cut-in-100-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pieter-coetze-adds-another-commonwealth-cut-in-100-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Pieter Coetze Adds Another Commonwealth Cut in 100 Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pieter Coetze Adds Another Commonwealth Cut in 100 Free\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pieter Coetze<\/strong> earned a third Commonwealth Games cut <a href=\"https:\/\/swimsa.org\/news\/canny-and-coetze-continue-commonwealth-charge-at-sa-swimming-champs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Thursday<\/a> on the third day of the South African Swimming Championships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 21-year-old augmented his two backstroke cuts by winning the 100 freestyle in 48.18 at the Bombela Concession Company South Africa National Aquatic Championships at Newton Park Swimming Pool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coetze\u2019s time was nearly a second up on <strong>Guy Brooks,<\/strong> who finished in 49.04. This was <strong>Kris Mihaylov<\/strong> in 49.63, while <strong>Ruard van<\/strong> <strong>Renen<\/strong>, who has two Commonwealth cuts already, finished fourth in 49.72, the last of the group to break 50 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/aimee-canny-off-to-fast-start-at-south-african-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aimee Canny Off to Fast Start at South African Championships<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aimee Canny<\/strong> qualified for Commonwealths in her fourth and final event of the meet in Gqeberha. The Virginia swimmer bested a loaded field in the 200 breaststroke, so long the South African women\u2019s program\u2019s speciality. Her time of 2:23.61 edged reigning Worlds bronze medalist <strong>Kaylene Corbett<\/strong>, who finished second in 2:23.72 to also qualify for the summer meet. <strong>Rebecca Meder<\/strong> was third in 2:27.36.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The swim is Canny\u2019s fourth qualification in three days. She wraps up her meet before heading back to Charlottesville to train.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women\u2019s 100 free went to <strong>Erin Gallagher<\/strong>, the national record holder winning in 55.12 to edge <strong>Olivia Nel<\/strong> in a thrilling race. Nel was second in 55.17, both times short of the Commonwealth standard. <strong>Jessica Thompson<\/strong> was third in 55.50, .01 up on <strong>Caitlin Le Lange<\/strong> and .05 up on <strong>Michaela De Villiers<\/strong>, while <strong>Georgia Nel<\/strong> also broke 56 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Catherine Van Rensburg<\/strong> won the women\u2019s 400 individual medley in 4:56.26. It was a congested pack behind her, <strong>Karla Myburgh\u2019s<\/strong> 4:58.08 leading a contingent of 4:58s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Shaun Thompson<\/strong> bested the field in the men\u2019s 200 breast in 2:15.00, a second up on <strong>Zaine Neimand. Karl Albertyn<\/strong> finished the IM double by winning the 400 in 4:24.83, 2.5 seconds up on <strong>Juan Boshoff.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>South Africa Commonwealth Games
