Down, acts as a selection meet for the European Championships, European Para Swimming Championships, Commonwealth Games and European juniors.<\/p>\n<p>Wiffen, McSharry and Olympic finalist <strong>Ellen Walshe<\/strong>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/john-shortt-talks-european-excellence-pushing-the-boundaries-and-wiffen-momentum\/\">World Junior and European Short Course champion<\/a> <strong>John Shortt<\/strong> and European U23 champion <strong>Ellie McCartney<\/strong>, have all achieved initial qualification times for the European Aquatics Championships in Paris (10=16 August) following their performances at last summer\u2019s World Championships as have 2024 European champion <strong>Danielle Hill<\/strong>, 2025 European (SC) bronze medallist <strong>Evan Bailey, Tom Fannon, Jack Cassin<\/strong> and<strong> Eoin Corby.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a result, Wiffen, McCartney and Hill have additionally secured initial qualification times for the Commonwealth Games that run in Glasgow from 24-29 July.<\/p>\n<h3>Watershed Meet for Wiffen<\/h3>\n<p>Wiffen goes alongside twin Nathan in the 1500 free to decide the first title of the meet on Wednesday and he\u2019ll also contest the 200, 400 and 800 free in which he won Olympic gold in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Wiffen\u2019s last international appearance came at the short-course Europeans in Lublin, Poland, in December last year where he added a gold and two bronzes to his silverware collection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_586002\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-586002\" data-attachment-id=\"586002\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-wiffen-set-for-potentially-pivotal-irish-open-mona-mcsharry-leaves-options-open-ahead-of-la-2028\/daniel-and-nathan-wiffen\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Daniel-and-Nathan-Wiffen.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1200,1200\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Daniel and Nathan Wiffen\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;11-6-24&lt;br \/&gt;\nDaniel and Nathan Wiffen: Photo courtesy: Swim Ireland&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Nathan Wiffen, right; Photo courtesy: Swim Ireland&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Daniel-and-Nathan-Wiffen-700x500.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Daniel-and-Nathan-Wiffen-1024x1024.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-586002\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Daniel-and-Nathan-Wiffen-700x500.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel and Nathan Wiffen\" width=\"251\" height=\"179\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-586002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Wiffen, left; Nathan Wiffen, right; Photo courtesy: Swim Ireland<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That followed the 2025 World Championships in Singapore where he was badly affected by appendicitis which forced him to withdraw from the defence of his 1500 crown, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-wiffen-talks-singapore-agony-new-horizons-with-eyes-on-lublin-prize\/\">something he said<\/a> \u201ckind of killed me inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He outlined his targets for Bangor as swimming inside 3:43 for the 400, 7:42 in the 800 and below 14:40 for the 1500.<\/p>\n<p>Should he not do that, then big plans may be afoot with Wiffen having moved continents and coaches last year, swapping Loughborough for the sunshine of the US west coast with Cal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m going to be very honest, if I don&#8217;t swim fast next week I&#8217;m not going to stay in California,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I&#8217;m around those times, under or around PB, then that&#8217;s great. That obviously means the training is working, and if it doesn&#8217;t work then I [have to figure out] what I&#8217;m going do after,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m thinking of coming back to Dublin if it doesn&#8217;t go well, but, we have to see. I don&#8217;t want to push through if I&#8217;m not enjoying it &#8211; but I do see myself racing in 2028, especially going the way I feel right now about training.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following the championships, McSharry will also receive the Freedom of Sligo on 14 April.<\/p>\n<p>Swim Ireland\u2019s National Performance Director <strong>Andy Reid<\/strong> said: \u201cThis meet is about more than qualification; it\u2019s about continuing to prepare our athletes and coaches to perform when it matters most.
