Northern California Won a Championship by Playing for Each Other<\/h1>\n

Long overshadowed by Southern California in youth water polo, a Northern California group built around trust, role clarity, and unselfish play turned an underdog run into a breakthrough championship.<\/p>\n

Editor\u2019s Note:<\/strong> The USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program National Championship gathers top regional athletes from across the country in one of the sport\u2019s most competitive development environments. The 2026 boys championship took place March 6\u20138 in Chula Vista, California.<\/p>\n

Northern California wasn\u2019t supposed to win this tournament.<\/p>\n

NorCal “PAC Red” Olympic Development National Champions<\/p><\/div>\n

For years, the power center in American youth water polo has lived in Southern California. The depth, the reputation, the pipeline \u2014 it all points south. Northern California has produced strong teams and elite athletes, but the broader script has rarely changed.
\nNot this time.<\/p>\n

\"Olympic<\/p>\n

In Chula Vista, a Northern California group flipped that script, turning a team-first philosophy into a championship and delivering one of the clearest statements yet that the gap is narrower than many think.<\/p>\n

Representing the Pacific zone as PAC Red at the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program National Championship, the team didn\u2019t just win the Boys Youth division. It changed the conversation.<\/p>\n

Different Programs, One Identity<\/h2>\n

ODP teams are built fast.Players arrive from different clubs, systems, and coaching styles. They have limited time to train, limited time to connect, and then are thrown into one of the most competitive environments in youth water polo. Chemistry is not guaranteed. PAC Red made it their priority. Head coach Marcus Longton<\/strong> worked alongside Giorgio Alessandria<\/strong>, St. Ignatius head coach John Roberts<\/strong>, and Scott Andron<\/strong> \u2014 coaches from across Northern California. Each brought a different approach. None tried to override the others. Instead, they aligned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all have different strengths,\u201d Longton said. \u201cSome guys are stronger tactically, some are better one-on-one with players, some bring energy. But we trusted each other and let those styles work together.\u201d That trust showed up immediately. \u201cThere was no feeling of stepping on toes,\u201d Longton said. \u201cWe just worked really well together.\u201d Before the players bought in, the coaches did.<\/p>\n

The message to the team was simple. Play for each other. Not in theory. In execution. \u201cWe really tried to get the guys to buy into the idea of playing for each other,\u201d Longton said. \u201cTaking pride in setting up your teammate more than yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"ODP<\/p>\n

That mindset shaped everything.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the most important play isn\u2019t the shot. It\u2019s the pass that sets it up.<\/p>\n

If one player had the better look, the ball moved. If a defender created pressure, someone else found space. If a role needed to change, players adapted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told the guys they had to be comfortable getting uncomfortable,\u201d Longton said.<\/p>\n

They were.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody played a critical role,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd everyone understood their role really clearly.\u201d That clarity became an advantage.<\/p>\n

The Edge<\/h2>\n

Northern California teams have lived with the same narrative for years.<\/p>\n

Southern California dominates. Southern California develops the most talent. Southern California sets the standard.<\/p>\n

PAC Red didn\u2019t ignore that.<\/p>\n

They used it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always kind of been this stereotype that Southern California water polo is superior,\u201d Longton said. \u201cWe came down here ready to prove people wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

That edge turned into fuel.<\/p>\n

Before the championship game, PAC Red players heard that a coach from the other side of the bracket told his team that whoever won their semifinal would likely win the tournament.<\/p>\n

The message made its way across the deck.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told the guys, \u2018Just so you know, they think they\u2019re going to come over here and spank our asses,\u2019\u201d Longton said.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

PAC Red responded with one of its most complete performances of the weekend, tightening defensively and pulling away in the second half.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were playing for something bigger than themselves that day,\u201d Longton said.<\/p>\n

Calm in the Chaos<\/h2>\n

Water polo doesn\u2019t stay steady.<\/p>\n

Games swing. Momentum shifts. Emotions spike.<\/p>\n

Longton believed the coaching staff\u2019s role was to counter that.<\/p>\n

\u201cYounger athletes need a source of stability,\u201d he said. \u201cThe coach needs to be the one to anchor that \u2014 to show through body language that everything is going to be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

That philosophy became part of the team\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we focus on is what we can control,\u201d Longton said. \u201cThe way we play offense, the way we play defense, and how we react.\u201d<\/p>\n

The score didn\u2019t change the approach.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re up three, down three, or tied, we stay the same,\u201d he said. \u201cWe just keep chipping away.\u201d<\/p>\n

And they did.<\/p>\n

Northern California Water Polo Champions<\/p><\/div>\n

Rising Contributors, Shared Purpose<\/h2>\n

The championship wasn\u2019t built around one player.<\/p>\n

It was built around a group.<\/p>\n

Still, several athletes stood out within that framework.<\/p>\n

Hunter Coleman<\/strong>, a cadet-aged player from Stanford Water Polo Club<\/strong>, showed rare versatility.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s about 6-6 and only 15 years old,\u201d Longton said. \u201cBut what stood out was how coachable he was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lamorinda\u2019s<\/strong> Trent Smith<\/strong> made an equally important impact after being elevated from the Pacific Blue roster.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe completely rose to the occasion,\u201d Longton said. \u201cPlayed phenomenal defense, moved the ball well, and scored some big goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their performances mattered.<\/p>\n

But they weren\u2019t the story.<\/p>\n

The story was how the group functioned.<\/p>\n

More Than a Title<\/h2>\n

For the first time in recent memory, Northern California\u2019s PAC Red finished first.<\/p>\n

That matters.<\/p>\n

But what mattered more was how it happened.<\/p>\n

A group of coaches from different programs aligned around a shared message. A roster of players from different clubs bought into roles. A team-first approach replaced individual agendas.<\/p>\n

In a sport where pedigree often sets expectations before the first whistle, Northern California showed something else:<\/p>\n

You can build something quickly.
\nYou can trust it.
\nAnd if everyone commits to it\u2014
\nYou can win with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe came down here ready to prove people wrong,\u201d Longton said.<\/p>\n
