{"id":640913,"date":"2026-04-02T09:56:36","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=640913"},"modified":"2026-04-03T06:09:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T13:09:30","slug":"usa-open-water-championships-mariah-denigan-holds-off-hansen-twichell-for-10k-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-open-water-championships-mariah-denigan-holds-off-hansen-twichell-for-10k-title\/","title":{"rendered":"USA Open Water Championships: Mariah Denigan, Ivan Puskovitch Win 10K Titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>USA Open Water Championships: Mariah Denigan Holds off Hansen, Twichell for 10K Title<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2026 USA Swimming Open Water Championships kicked off with the women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s 10K national championship Thursday in Sarasota, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Olympian <strong>Mariah Denigan, <\/strong>now training at Ohio State, was able to hold off the field to win the women&#8217;s race in 2 hours, 3 minutes and 54 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Three other swimmers finished within 13 seconds of the winner in the field of 35 finishers. Saint Petersburg Aquatics&#8217; <strong>Brinkleigh Hansen<\/strong> was just eight seconds behind, taking second place with a swim of 2:04:02.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/websiteprodcoresa.blob.core.windows.net\/sitefinity\/docs\/default-source\/timesdocuments\/meet-results\/open-water-nationals\/competition-results---2026-open-water-national-championships.pdf?sfvrsn=70ad1f32_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2026 Open Water Championships Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/open-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Water News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Third place went to Olympic veteran <strong>Ashley Twichel<\/strong>l, swimming for the TAC Titans, who crossed the finish line in 2:04:04, 10 seconds behind Denigan. Just three seconds behind Twichell was her TAC Titan and Team USA teammate <strong>Becca Mann<\/strong>, who finished in 2:04:07 for fourth place.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth place went to Long Island Aquatic Club&#8217;s <strong>Alex Siegal<\/strong>, who crossed the finish line in 2:04:24.<\/p>\n<p>Another TAC Titans swimmer followed as <strong>Brooke Travis<\/strong> took sixth in 2:05:32.<\/p>\n<p>The top six finishers in both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s fields will receive invitationals to a pair of World Cup events in the next month \u2013 April 24 in Ibiza, Spain, and May 1 in Golfo Aranci, Italy. This race and the two World Cup races will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-to-utilize-points-system-to-determine-open-water-team-for-pan-pacs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">part of a points-based system to determine the four Americans<\/a> of each gender representing the nation at the Pan Pacific Championships this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s <strong>Emma Finlin<\/strong> (2:05:34) and <strong>Delphine Piatera-Mercier<\/strong> (2:07:41) took seventh and 10th, respectively. That was enough for Finlin to qualify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.ca\/blog\/three-swimmers-qualify-for-pan-pacs-at-open-water-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to represent Swimming Canada<\/a> at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Gold Medal Swim Club&#8217;s <strong>Paige Downey<\/strong> finished eighth in 2:05.49 and ninth place went to Ohio State&#8217;s <strong>Mila Nikaronov<\/strong>, who crossed the finish line in 2:07.19.<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, Denigan\u2019s fellow Paris Olympian <strong>Ivan Puskovitch<\/strong> got the win in 1:55.05. Swimming for TSM Aquatics, Puskovitch bested <strong>Dylan Gravley<\/strong> by three seconds.<\/p>\n<p>They separated from the leading pack late. <strong>Collin Jacobs<\/strong> was third in 1:55.25, two seconds up on Minnesota\u2019s <strong>Joey Tepper<\/strong> and three seconds ahead of <strong>Joshua Brown<\/strong> of Sandpipers of Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas duo of <strong>Aiden Hammer<\/strong> was sixth in 1:55.45, a minute up on Longhorn Aquatics mate <strong>Alexander Lyubavskiy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the collegians in the field, <strong>Luke Ellis<\/strong> of Indiana finished 11th. Kentucky\u2019s <strong>Levi Sandidge<\/strong> was 13th, and <strong>Charlie Clark<\/strong> of Ohio State was 15th.
