{"id":640854,"date":"2026-03-31T12:19:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T19:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=640854"},"modified":"2026-03-31T12:19:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T19:19:37","slug":"7-foot-new-jersey-swimmer-max-ciechanowski-competes-to-honor-late-father","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/7-foot-new-jersey-swimmer-max-ciechanowski-competes-to-honor-late-father\/","title":{"rendered":"7-foot New Jersey Swimmer Max Ciechanowski Competes to Honor Late Father"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>7-foot New Jersey Swimmer Max Ciechanowski Competes to Honor Late Father<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Standing 7 feet tall, <strong>Max Ciechanowski<\/strong> has become one of the top high school swimmers in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Ciechanowski had his choice of sports, but swims because he loves the sport &#8211; and because it tightens the bond with his late father.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I get asked a lot about basketball and other sports, and what I\u2019m doing swimming,&#8221; Max <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/highschoolsports\/2026\/03\/7-foot-swimmer-honors-late-fathers-legacy-aims-to-be-njs-next-olympic-star.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told NJ.com<\/a>. &#8220;The short answer is I\u2019m better at swimming. &#8230; I have a true passion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His father <strong>Karol Ciechanowski<\/strong> died in 2022 from a heart attack at age 45 and was an inspiration for Max. Karol, 6-5, left Poland for the United States when he was in high school, set college records at St. John&#8217;s and swam against <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> in the 2000 Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I was younger, it just seemed like he was a superhero,&#8221; Max said. \u201cIt set the standard of what I think I should achieve and how high I\u2019m able to go in the sport. My dad is who I strive to be like. I\u2019d be grateful to be half the man he was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At 13, he took solace in the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pool has always been a place for me where I\u2019m able to take time away from whatever\u2019s on my mind,\u201d Max said. \u201cI have that outlet for two hours to go and just swim and focus on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that is what he did &#8211; burying his grief lap after lap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t think, I couldn\u2019t sleep, I couldn\u2019t eat. I didn\u2019t know what to do,\u201d his mother <strong>Martyna<\/strong> said. \u201cHe was swimming every day for hours. He didn\u2019t want to talk to anybody. He just wanted to swim. I spoke to his coach and a psychologist, who\u2019s a friend, and they said, \u2018Let him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It went from a place of solace to a place where Max found purpose.<\/p>\n<p>He swims for Delbarton High School in Morristown and once he got into the water there, he was dealing with different kind of pain &#8211; growth spurts, which led to pulled muscles all over his body. Delbarton also produced <strong>Jack Alexy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe dealt with a lot of growing pains, particularly in his knees and his legs,\u201d Delbarton coach <strong>Pat<\/strong> <strong>Savidge<\/strong> told NJ.com. \u201cHe had grown so much in the year leading up to it. He still swam fast, but I don\u2019t think he improved as much as he had hoped for himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until this season.<\/p>\n<p>Ciechanowski finished fourth in the 200 free at the state finals (1:40.77).
