NCAA Men’s Championships: With Something to Prove, Rex Maurer Sets 400 IM American Record<\/strong><\/p>\n

A year ago, Rex Maurer<\/strong> made the 400 individual medley title part of a resurgent NCAAs for the Texas sophomore.\u00a0Thursday night, he defended his title in spectacular fashion and while feeling more pressure than in his first go-round.<\/p>\n

Maurer won the 400 IM in 3:32.96 at Georgia Tech\u2019s McAuley Aquatics Center, downing the nearly decade-old American record in the process.<\/p>\n

Maurer was more than two seconds up on teammate Baylor Nelson.<\/strong> Maurer\u2019s time downs the American mark set in 2017 by Chase Kalisz<\/strong> at 3:33.42.<\/p>\n

“It’s super special,” Maurer said. “I think after I broke the 500 free record at last mid-season<\/a>, that was my goal that next day, was to go after that (400 IM) record. I fell a little bit short. I was a little bit faster at NCs last year. So to get that big drop really means a lot. I think it’s kind of evidence for how much work I\u2019ve put in, to my breaststroke, especially, and kind of that opening speed. I was really proud of that first 200 being aggressive.<\/p>\n
