﻿{"id":639863,"date":"2026-03-25T16:21:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T23:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=639863"},"modified":"2026-03-26T04:22:24","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T11:22:24","slug":"ncaa-mens-championships-arizona-state-edges-florida-in-200-medley-relay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-mens-championships-arizona-state-edges-florida-in-200-medley-relay\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA Men&#8217;s Championships: Arizona State Edges Florida in 200 Medley Relay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NCAA Men&#8217;s Championships: Arizona State Edges Florida in 200 Medley Relay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s quest for team placement at last year\u2019s NCAA Championships was dealt a blow on Night 1 with a disqualification in the 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s spoiler was more benign, though still disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>Led by <strong>Ilya Kharun\u2019s<\/strong> split of 18.70 on butterfly, Arizona State upended the newly-minted NCAA record holders, going 1:20.07 to take the title on the opening night at Georgia Tech\u2019s McAuley Aquatics Center.<\/p>\n<p>The time takes down the meet record that Florida set in 2024, though the NCAA mark from SECs of 1:20.03 stands. The 1:20 barrier remains resilient, though for how long remains to be seen. Both times are quicker than the 1:20.28 that Texas used to win last year.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona State set the pace with the team of <strong>Adam Chaney, Andy Dobrzanski,<\/strong> Kharun and <strong>Jonny Kulow.<\/strong> It&#8217;s well under the American record of 1:20.92 set last year by Indiana, but that record would require confirmation of Kharun\u2019s nationality shift from Canada back to the United States.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/swimmeetresults.tech\/NCAA-Division-I-Men-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2026-ncaa-division-i-mens-swimming-and-diving-championship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complete Meet Coverage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Florida was second with <strong>Jonny Marshall, Koen de Groot, Scotty Buff<\/strong> and <strong>Josh Liendo. <\/strong>De Groot is the new face on the team, replacing last year\u2019s 100 breaststroke champion <strong>Julian Smith.<\/strong> Liendo and Buff switched legs on the back-end this year.<\/p>\n<p>Texas was third in 1:20.46. Indiana secured fourth in 1:21.12. NC State set a fast pace from the morning slowest heat, with the team of<strong> Quintin McCarty, Daniel Diehl, Aiden Hayes<\/strong> and <strong>Drew Salls<\/strong> going 1:21.23 to knock 1.5 seconds off their seed time. It ended up fifth at night. California was sixth, with Michigan seventh and Kentucky eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee was ninth overall at 1:22.05 from the morning swims, led by a 19.35 split in butterfly from <strong>Gui Caribe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Modglin\u2019s<\/strong> 20.19 was the fastest backstroke split out of Texas. At 22.35, <strong>Yamato Okadome<\/strong> was the fastest breaststroker for Cal, with Texas\u2019 <strong>Nate Germonprez<\/strong> second at 22.39. Kharun\u2019s 18.70 was faster than, for instance, the freestyle anchor by California\u2019s <strong>Martin Wrede.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the freestylers, Liendo led the way in 17.58.
