NCAA Women’s Championships: Sophie Verzyl Delivers Late for 3-Meter Gold<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thursday night at Georgia Tech, Chiara Pellacani<\/strong> waited on the deck and watched \u2013 or didn\u2019t watch \u2013 as Sophie Verzyl<\/strong> dove last with a chance to pass her for the NCAA title on 1-meter.<\/p>\n

Friday, the roles were reversed on 3-meter, much to the South Carolina senior\u2019s delight. And with her eyes wide open.<\/p>\n

Verzyl\u2019s final dive pushed her into the lead, a score of 387.90 points withstanding two late chances to pass her and earning her first NCAA title on 3-meter. She had come up .25 points shy on 1-meter a night earlier<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Desharne Bent-Ashmeil<\/strong> of Tennessee finished second with a score of 382.25. Minnesota\u2019s Elna Widerstrom<\/strong> was third, with Pellacani, the reigning silver medalist and first out of prelims, fourth.<\/p>\n
