OMAHA, Neb, December 11. THE Truman men had an all out dog fight on their hands over the weekend at the Mutual of Omaha Invitational. The men were pitted against the University of South Dakota. It came down to the last few events on the second day but the South Dakota men came away with the win over the Bulldogs, 1,256 to 1,111.<\/p>\n
The Coyote men finished with 1,256 points to edge Truman State which had 1,111 points. The USD women finished with 488 points as Truman State finished with 1,581 points to win the women's title. UNO was second with 733 and Wisconsin-LaCrosse third with 700. (Complete team results are posted at the bottom of this story).<\/p>\n
The South Dakota men\u2019s team won the title by capturing nine first place titles, including victories in four of five relays (USD finished second in the other relay). Bram Olson, a junior from Hutchinson, Minn., had an outstanding meet with six first place finishes. He won two individual titles in the 50 free in 21.27 and 100 free in 46.61. In addition, he was a member of the four winning relays (200 free, 200 medley, 400 free and 800 free) and was on the second-place 400 medley.
\nOther winners included Garth Meacham of West Des Moines, Iowa, who captured a title in the 200 fly in 1:57.70 and was second in the 1000 free in 10:14.21. Jeremy Weed of Verona, Wis., won the 100 fly in 52.34 while diver Dan Gay of Fairbury, Neb., won the 3-meter diving competition. <\/p>\n
In addition, Tim Byers finished second in the 200 back in 1:56.53 and the 100 back in 53.29. Michael Damonte, a freshman from Reno, Nev., was second in the 200 IM in 1:59.82. The 200 free relay came home with a title in 1:23.62. Olson, Alex Smith (Houston, Texas), John Murman (Lincoln, Neb.) and Dirk Craft (Palmer, Alaska) led the team to victory. Three other relays took home titles including the 400 Free Relay in 3:07.38 (Alex Smith, Craft, Murman, Olson); the 800 Free Relay in 7:01.87 (Matt Lind, Olson, Murman, Charles Scribner); and 200 Medley in 1:35.29 (Byers, Craft, Tyler Scheer and Olson). <\/p>\n
Indicative of the team\u2019s depth was the 50 free. USD had four of the top seven finishers led by Olson. Murman finished second in 21.82; while Craft was fourth, in 22.03 and Weed, seventh, 22.12. In the 400 IM, USD had four of the top seven spots with Lind (Kearney, Neb.), third, in 4:21.99. Mark Bryant of Omaha, Neb., was fourth in the 400 IM in 4:23.21with Adrian Smith of Plano, Texas, fifth in 4:23.49; and Scribner, seventh in 4:21.08.<\/p>\n
The Truman Bulldog men also had some stand-out performances over the weekend. Teson claimed individual victories in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.61 and 100 back with a time of 52.85. The 200 backstroke proved to be instrumental in scoring points for the Bulldogs who also claimed third and fourth in that event with senior Bryan Meyer (Tonganoxie, Kan.\/Tonganoxie) recording a time of 1:5.86 and freshman Robert Fletcher (Broken Arrow, Okla.) swimming a time of 1:57.71.<\/p>\n
Harken also claimed two individual victories in the 100 (59.23) and 200 (2:12.22) breaststrokes. Junior Phil Brown (Estes Park, Colo.) added another victory in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:18.24.<\/p>\n
Junior Eric Paden (Prairie Village, Kan.\/Shawnee Mission East) recorded wins in the 1,000 (10:12.58) and 1,650 (17:01.96) freestyles, while senior Ryan Jacobi (Florissant, Mo.\/DeSmet Jesuit) took second in the 1,650 (17:12.93).Senior Robby Cooper (Holden, Mo.) won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.34. Following his lead, the Truman men placed second, fourth and fifth in that race as well.
