{"id":637656,"date":"2026-02-27T05:29:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T12:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=637656"},"modified":"2026-02-27T05:29:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T12:29:40","slug":"swim-for-tim-southern-connecticut-state-memorializes-tim-quill-with-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swim-for-tim-southern-connecticut-state-memorializes-tim-quill-with-title\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Swim For Tim\u2019: Southern Connecticut State Memorializes Tim Quill with Title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u2018Swim For Tim\u2019: Southern Connecticut State Memorializes Tim Quill with Title<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Southern Connecticut State\u2019s swimming and diving program learned on Feb. 11 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/southern-connecticut-state-mourns-sudden-passing-of-coach-tim-quill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the sudden and unexpected passing of long-time head coach<\/a> <strong>Tim Quill.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That same week, it was back in the water, living out Quill\u2019s legacy by winning a conference title.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the latest memory shared by a community that Quill was instrumental in fostering in his time at the helm of the Owls.<\/p>\n<p>Against the backdrop of Quill\u2019s sudden passing, the SCSU squad <a href=\"https:\/\/scsuowls.com\/news\/2026\/2\/15\/womens-swimming-diving-scsu-womens-swimming-diving-winfortim-capture-6th-straight-ne10-title.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the women\u2019s team title<\/a> at the Northeast 10 Championships, culminating Feb. 15, led by Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet <strong>Molly Kennedy.<\/strong> It\u2019s their sixth straight and 18th overall NE10 title, powered by 13 individuals who combined for 20 total medals (individual and relay).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/blast-from-the-past-how-ben-michaelson-shattered-the-norm-and-became-a-pioneer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribute to Tim Quill: How Ben Michaelson Shattered the Norm and Became a Pioneer<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The men\u2019s team finished <a href=\"https:\/\/scsuowls.com\/news\/2026\/2\/15\/mens-swimming-diving-scsu-mens-swimming-diving-finishes-fourth-in-final-day-of-ne10-championship.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth at the NE10 championships<\/a>. Photos from that meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernct.edu\/student-life\/athletics\/tim-quill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are included on the university\u2019s tribute page to Quill<\/a>, headlined, \u201cUnited by Legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It includes <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni-friends.southernct.edu\/areas-of-support\/tim-quill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a link to fundraising for<\/a> the Timothy P. Quill IV Scholarship in his memory to support future athletes. Many swimmers swam with #SwimforTim written on their arms, a hashtag that became #WinforTim when the women\u2019s team finished the job.<\/p>\n<p>Quill, 58, led the Division II program to 34 NE10 titles, plus this current one. Kennedy is the 20th Conference Swimmer of the Year he\u2019s mentored. He had been with the program for 28 years.<\/p>\n<p>SCSU published <a href=\"https:\/\/scsuowls.com\/news\/2026\/2\/24\/general-scsu-remembers-tim-quill.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a lengthy memorial of tributes<\/a> that poured in upon his passing, from former swimmers and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe helped young athletes understand that college swimming isn\u2019t a place to plateau or rely on your high school times to score points,\u201d said <strong>Erin Leirey,<\/strong> a 2020 graduate. \u201cIt\u2019s a place to challenge yourself, to work harder than you ever have before, and to succeed at a level you\u2019ve never reached in the water. #builtnotbought<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went on to challenge myself physically and mentally more than ever before, all while making unforgettable memories and growing in confidence and courage. I owe it all to the legend himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoach Tim took the time to mentor other coaches,\u201d West Chester University head coach <strong>Steve Mazurek<\/strong> said. \u201cWe had discussions that informed my own coaching outlook, and I reflect on those talks regularly. He challenged me to define success and to pursue that in everything. He was honest, open, and eager to share. Coach Tim was one of the best to ever walk the pool deck. I\u2019m forever grateful that our coaching paths crossed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tim meant more to me than just a coach,\u201d <strong>Loren Wurst,<\/strong> a 2022 graduate, said. \u201cHe truly helped shape who I am. Swimming was such a huge part of my life, and so much of what made it meaningful came from his influence. He taught us discipline and resilience, and showed us that nothing worth achieving comes without hard work. He pushed us when we felt like we had nothing left, and he believed in us even when we didn\u2019t believe in ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a
