{"id":636570,"date":"2026-02-11T12:24:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=636570"},"modified":"2026-02-11T15:45:32","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T22:45:32","slug":"southern-connecticut-state-mourns-sudden-passing-of-coach-tim-quill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/southern-connecticut-state-mourns-sudden-passing-of-coach-tim-quill\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Connecticut State Mourns Sudden Passing of Coach Tim Quill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Southern Connecticut State Mourns Sudden Passing of Coach Tim Quill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday announced the death of head coach <strong>Tim Quill.<\/strong> He was 58 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Quill spent 28 years leading the Owls men\u2019s and women\u2019s swim teams, turning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/morning-swim-showfeb-11-tim-quill-leading-southern-conn-to-prominence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">them into significant players in the<\/a> Northeast 10 Conference and nationally in Division II. He led the Owls to 34 NE10 titles (17 men, 17 women), along the way being voted Coach of the Year by his peers on 28 occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2008, <a href=\"https:\/\/northeast10.org\/news\/2024\/8\/14\/general-tim-quill-the-architect-of-the-southern-connecticut-swimming-diving-dynasty.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he mentored<\/a> 10 NE10 Swimmer of the Year and five Divers of the Year on the men\u2019s side and nine Swimmers of the Year and seven Divers of the Year on the women\u2019s side. He coached <strong>Ben Michaelson<\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/blast-from-the-past-how-ben-michaelson-shattered-the-norm-and-became-a-pioneer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 NCAA titles<\/a> in butterfly and freestyle from 2001-03. <strong>Raymond Cswerko<\/strong> won an NCAA championship in 2014. <strong>Kristen Frost<\/strong> won three NCAA titles and set three NCAA records in 2008, and <strong>Amanda Thomas<\/strong> won three NCAA championships from 2011-13.<\/p>\n<p>Michaelson recently visited with Quill, the two spending time together in Fort Lauderdale when SCSU was on a training trip.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;We always stayed close over the years,&#8221; Michaelson said. &#8220;I\u2019m glad I listened to the little voice on my shoulder that said, &#8216;Go hang out with your friend.&#8217; Last thing we did together was win a couple hundred bucks at the Hard Rock Casino. I gave him a hug when we got to the hotel, told him I loved him, and got on an airplane home the next morning.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;Last time we talked was a couple days ago. He was trying to get me to fly up for the conference meet this weekend. I\u2019m just in shock and I feel really sad that my friend is gone.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>Quill also coached at SoNoCo Swim Club, mentoring athletes that qualified for U.S. Olympic Trials and the Pan American Games.<\/p>\n<p>Quill graduated from Alfred University in 1989, where he was a four-time All-American swimmer. His commitment, his steadiness, and his genuine care for our student athletes made him a pillar of this community. Tim&#8217;s legacy is one of service, mentorship, and heart.
