THE Georgia swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition on the final day of the 2003 Georgia Fall Invitational at Gabrielsen Natatorium Sunday. The Lady Bulldogs won all five swimming events in the final session to win the three-day invitational with 1,454 total points, while the men’s meet saw Minnesota and Georgia go down to the last event. Minnesota would win with 1201.50 points and Georgia finishing second with 1,185 points.

WOMEN’S MEET RECAP

Despite little doubt in the outcome on the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs earned top honors in five of the six events and posted a runner-up finish on platform diving to win their seventh straight Georgia Invitational. The 1,454-point total is the highest mark for Georgia at the event, surpassing the 1,415 total in 1999. The men finished behind the Gophers for the third time in the last four years, this time by a mere 16.5 points.

"We are real proud of both teams for the way they competed at this meet," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "Minnesota has a fine men's team. It was a great battle. They can here two years ago and beat us pretty bad. This meet was much closer, and we are a much better men's team than we were two years ago."

Sophomore Laura Conway clocked an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:12.60 to win the 1650-yard freestyle, while freshman Haley Chura added points with a first-place finish in the 200-meter backstroke. Kara Lynn Joyce added another victory and an A-cut time to her list, as the Lady Bulldogs swept the top four spots in the 100-meter freestyle.

Lindsey Ertter led a 1-2 punch in the 200-meter breaststroke, touching the wall first in an automatic qualifying time of 2:29.40. Melissa Klein also swam under the automatic standard, finishing second in 2:29.79. Mary DeScenza and Katie Yevak both posted A-cut times in the 200-meter butterfly, as Georgia had five Lady Bulldogs finish in the top eight.

Freshman Emily Hunter contributed to the Georgia cause with a runner-up finish in the platform diving event. Sara Hershman took fifth, while Karen Dierks finished eighth.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the weekend event by winning the 400-meter freestyle relay, as the foursome of Ertter, Neka Mabry, Samantha Arsenault and Joyce touched first in 3:45.29.

"Even though we had things in hand, we competed extremely well today," added Bauerle. "Mary DeScenza and Kara Lynn Joyce were terrific again today. Katie Yevak also did a great job, and Neka Mabry had possibly her best meet since her freshman year. We got some great swims from those we consider our second-line folks, who would probably be first liners on other teams.

"This is the best we have done at this invitational since we began hosting it," offered Bauerle. "Our freestyle is real strong, and that is going to help us a lot at NCAAs because it has such an impact in the relays."

The Gophers placed three in the 200 breaststroke finals. Leading the way for Minnesota was Melissa Schold who finished fifth overall in 2:34.48. Abby Ruess added a time of 2:36.86 finishing seventh, while Carol Crouthmamel placed eighth overall in 2:38.49. Megan Moore clocked a time of 2:16.69 for a fifth-place finish, while Katie Wind added a seventh-place mark in 2:20.62.

Katy Coombe and Kate Hardt represented Minnesota in the 100 free placing fifth and seventh overall. Coombe added a provisional qualifying time of 56.11, while Hardt chipped in a provisional time of 56.66. However, Georgia's Kara Joyce added an automatic qualifying time of 55.03 to win the event.

Juleen Rodakowski placed third in the 200-yard butterfly with a provisional qualifying time of 2:11.98.

Minnesota ended the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay. The Gophers clocked a time of 3:46.53, which also provisionally qualified them for the NCAA Championships. The second- place finish of Coombe, Moore, Sarah Perrott and Hardt earned the Gophers 34 points, but it wasn't enough to hold on to second place overall. Minnesota's B team of Sara Vine, Jessica Crawford, Ruess and Krista Kezbers added a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:52.77.

MEN’S MEET RECAP

The No. 9 University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team compiled 1201.50 points for a first-place finish at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. Minnesota's closest competition was host institution Georgia, who had 1185 points.

Minnesota's first competition of the day was the 1650-yard freestyle event, where Travis Beckerle finished second overall, earning 17 points. Beckerle added a time of 15:23.32, which provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships. David Moulder added a fourth-place showing in the event clocking a time of 15:42.20, while Adam Apprill finished ninth overall.

Minnesota added a one-two punch in the 200 back event placing two in the first and second spots. Adam Mitchell won the event with a provisional qualifying time of 1:57.33. Diego Urreta ended the event second also with a provisional time of 1:58.15. Combined the duo added 37 points in one race for Minnesota.

The Gophers added another first-place finish to their list when Terry Silkaitis won the 100 free event. Silkaitis chipped a provisional qualifying time of 49.60 and added another 20 points to Minnesota's score. Neil Osten finished third in 50.24, while Sean McCaffrey finished in a tie for sixth in 50.92.

The Maroon and Gold had four Gophers make it to the 200 Breaststroke A Final. Ryan Plummer led the way for Minnesota finishing third in 2:15.89. Freshman Alejandro Jacobo was right behind Plummer with a fourth-place showing finishing the race in 2:17.79. Nathan Bernier and Sean Kelly added sixth and seventh-place finishes ending the race in time of 2:18.46 and 2:18.63, respectively.

The Gophers also had three make it to the 200 Fly A Final. Lucas Peterson finished fourth overall, while Scott Young finished seventh and Zach Wood finished eighth.

The Gopher swimmers added a first and third-place showing in the 400 free relay to end the three-day meet. Minnesota's A team of Mitchell, Osten, McCaffrey and Silkaitis clocked a provisional qualifying time of 3:19.14 good enough for first place. Minnesota's B team of Christian Anguis, Kiel Ochalek, Brian Gettelfinger and Urreta finished the event in 3:24.33.

The Georgia men won four events in the final session, including Robert Margalis in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Cole Taylor and Matt Owen finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Kyle Salyards posted a provisional time of 2:13.51 to win the 200-meter breaststroke. Brent McAuliffe was right behind in second. Randy Lam led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-meter butterfly to pull the Bulldogs close to the Gophers with two events remaining.

Once again the divers added valuable points to the Bulldog effort, as freshman Chris Colwill took top honors on the platform with an overall score of 502.30. Athens native Todd Avery took third with a score of 477.05.

"This was a very good meet for our guys," added Bauerle. "They competed hard and we took Minnesota right down to the end. Our sprinters, specifically Josh Laban, Scott Gardner and Peter Verhoef, are changing our program for the better. They really came through for us this weekend.

"Robert again was sensational in the 1650," said Bauerle. "Randy and Kyle came up with some big points for us as well. Our divers were great this weekend. They are really going to give us a big boost this year."

The Georgia Fall Invitational marked the final event for the Red and Black during the 2003 calendar year. Georgia will return to action at the annual Georgia Diving Invitational Jan. 5-7 at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
