OAKLAND University took the first steps in posting its fifth consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships by ending the first day of competition with leads in both meets after sweeping first-place honors in all events at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.

The Oakland men (148) finished a short first day of events with a 36-point lead over second-place IUPUI (112), while Western Illinois (81) and Valparaiso (80) followed. The Golden Grizzly women (144) took away a 42-point lead over Western Illinois (102) after day one, with Valparaiso (94) and IUPUI (86) trailing in third and fourth, respectively.

The meet started with a record-setting performance by the Oakland women’s 200 medley relay team of Oksana Strelets, Shelley Aurit, Tanya Korniyenko and Jenna Dejonge, which broke an 11-year-old Mid-Con championship record by winning the event in 1:46.72. That time bested the old record set by Wright State (1:47.43) in the initial women’s championship in 1992. Oakland has won the event five straight seasons.

Oakland’s Angela Simetkosky won the 1650 freestyle event for the third straight season, capturing the title with a time of 17:19.78.

The women’s competition closed with another record-setting time by the Oakland women in a relay event. The team of Line Jensen, Korniyenko, Karoline Freytag and Simetkosky shattered another 11-year-old record in the 800 free relay, finishing with a time of 7:36.05, which broke Wright State’s record (7:38.46), set in 1992, by more than two seconds. The Golden Grizzlies won that event for the fifth straight year as well.

The Oakland men got things going with their own 200 medley relay win, as Chris Sullivan, Hunor Ma’te’, Eric Gusa and Sean Broadbent finished in a time of 1:32.61; it marked Oakland’s fourth win in five years in the 200 medley relay.

Oakland’s Tony Smucler posted a win in the 1650 free, touching the wall in 16:37.07, which was just three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

In the final event of the evening, Oakland won its fifth 800 free relay in as many seasons. Nick McCollum, Aroldo Nery, Bryon Tansel and Andy Munoz teamed to win the event in 6:56.77.

Event 1 Women 200 Yard Medley Relay
===============================================================================
MID-CON rec.: # 1:47.43  1992      Wright State
1:39.90  A
1:42.89  B
School                                                  Finals       Points
===============================================================================
1 Oakland  'A'                                          1:46.72#        40
1) Strelets, Oksana SR 2) Aurit, Shelley SR
3) Kornieyenko, Tanya SR 4) Dejonge, Jenna FR
27.39    30.00    24.92    24.41
2 Iupui  'A'                                            1:51.60         34
1) Krey, Kristen SO 2) Helphinstine, Clare JR
3) Miller, Kelly SO 4) Corn, Lindsay SO
28.90    31.89    26.82    23.99
3 Western Illinois  'A'                                 1:53.35         32
1) Hall, Erin FR 2) Farrar, Madeha FR
3) Mathis, Lindsay FR 4) Thomasson, Marcy SR
30.24    30.14    27.30    25.67
4 Valparaiso  'A'                                       1:54.45         30
1) Fisher, Julie SR 2) Deardorff, Sarah SR
3) Seale, Ashley SO 4) Gregory, Amanda FR
30.70    31.36    27.28    25.11
5 Centenary  'A'                                        1:57.94         28
1) Moulden, Kristin SO 2) Staton, Elizabeth FR
3) LeBlanc, Kayli FR 4) Rose, Lauren FR
29.86    33.67    27.98    26.43

Event 2 Men 200 Yard Medley Relay
===============================================================================
MID-CON rec.: # 1:32.43  1991      Wright State
1:26.72  A
1:29.32  B
School                                                  Finals       Points
===============================================================================
1 Oakland  'A'                                          1:32.61         40
1) Sullivan, Chris JR 2) Ma'te', Hunor FR
3) Gusa, Eric FR 4) Broadbent, Sean SR
23.68    24.76    23.28    20.89
2 Iupui  'A'                                            1:36.48         34
1) Anderson, Grant SR 2) Trame, Rob SO
3) Hutchison, Chris FR             4) Parks, A.J.
