AUBURN, Ala, December 5. AUBURN sophomore George Bovell clocked a NCAA automatic time in the 200 IM of 1:45.77 as action got underway at the Auburn Tiger Invitational on Thursday night at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. Bovell's time is currently the fastest in the nation by almost a full second. <\/p>\n

"We swam much better as a team tonight than this morning," AU assistant coach Ralph Crocker said. "Obviously George Bovell's swim is fast for this time of the season. We told him before the session that swimming the 500 freestyle before the 200 IM would not hurt him at this time of the year."<\/p>\n

Bovell, who set the NCAA record in the 200 IM at the 2003 championships, swam the 500 in a time of 4:37.09 in the event prior to the 200 IM, touching the wall first in the 'C' final. AU's BJ Jones was the top finisher in the championship final, clocking a 4:24.90.<\/p>\n

Leading the charge for the AU women was Eileen Coparropa, who placed first in the 50 free with a time of 22.77, and anchored the first-place finishing 400 medley relay (3:48.88) in a time of 51.06, which also included Kirsty Coventry, Laura Swander and Demerae Christianson.<\/p>\n

Auburn placed four women in the championship finals of the 500 free and took home the top four times in the race. Adrienne Binder was the top finisher with a time of 4:46.86, followed by Hayley Peirsol (4:48.21), Heather Kemp (4:50.87) and Kirsty Coventry (4:52.90), all of which were 'B' cuts.<\/p>\n

"I was really happy with the depth in the 500 free. It was fun to watch Heather Kemp swim her inaugural 500 of the season," AU Co-Head Women's Coach Kim Brackin said. "There was also some good racing by Kirsty Coventry in the 200 IM. We did a good job of transitioning from long course to short course this evening."<\/p>\n

Coventry won the women's 200 IM with an NCAA automatic time of 2:00.62.<\/p>\n

The meet continues on Friday morning with the prelims session starting at 10 a.m. CT. All prelim races are contested long course-meters while the finals, which begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, are swum short course-yards.<\/p>\n
