TEMPE, Ariz, December 4. VICKI Gorman, third year head coach of the Arizona State water polo team, announced Thursday the signing of Caylinn Wallace to an NCAA National Letter of Intent. A product of Laguna Hills High School in Laguna Hills, Calif., Wallace will join the team for the start of the 2005 season.<\/p>\n
"Caylinn has been a dominant player for her high school team and has accumulated a lot of saves in her career," Gorman said. "She has the size and length that we feel is important for our next starting goalie to posses. She will be in the running to be the starter as a freshman and we look forward to having her as a member of our team."<\/p>\n
Wallace has played three seasons for the Hawks and was named All-Sea View League First Team as a sophomore and junior while also being tabbed as her team's MVP. The team captain as a junior and senior, Wallace earned All-America honors at the Junior Olympic tournament in 2003 and also has set several records for her high school squad. As a junior, she established the top marks in assists in a season with 38, saves in a season with 319 and saves in a game with 19. Heading into her final season of competition at the prep level, she already holds the school record for saves in a career with 664. Wallace also has competed in softball and volleyball for LHHS and was selected a four-time Athlete of the Month for the Hawks as well as an eight-time scholar-athlete award winner.<\/p>\n
Outside of LHHS, Wallace competes for the TRAP club, a strong team based in southern California. Teams with members of the Arizona State team have faced Wallace and her TRAP team. At the US Water Polo Women's Open Championship (Oct. 25-26), ASU defeated TRAP, 5-3, on its way to placing fourth while TRAP ended the tournament in seventh.<\/p>\n
"She caught our eye this summer when she was playing in several tournaments with TRAP at the junior national and junior Olympic teams," Gorman said. "She performed well at the junior nationals and that is a true gauge to how she can do with us since more than half of the competitors in the tournament are on collegiate teams. She handled herself well and faced her fair share of shots. She showed strong character by not giving up, no matter how the game was going.
