{"id":631023,"date":"2026-01-03T16:08:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T23:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=631023"},"modified":"2026-01-03T16:08:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T23:08:27","slug":"wisconsin-uses-depth-to-swim-past-ucla-uc-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wisconsin-uses-depth-to-swim-past-ucla-uc-san-diego\/","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Uses Depth to Swim Past UCLA, UC-San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Wisconsin men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swim teams earned victories in San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<p>The Badgers won the women&#8217;s meet with 117 points, ahead of UCLA (100), UC-San Diego (44) and Tulane (1).<\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin men defeated UC-San Diego 175.5-86.5.<\/p>\n<p>The Badgers opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay. <strong>Maggie Wanezek, Brooke Corrigan, Hailey Tierney<\/strong> an <strong>Abby Wanezek<\/strong> got to the wall in 3:33.46. <strong>Maggie Wanezek<\/strong> won the 100 backstroke in 51.22 and 200 IM (1:56.74).<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin&#8217;s <strong>Blair Stoneburg<\/strong> won the 100 free in 9:41.96, ahead of teammate <strong>Maddie Waggoner<\/strong> (9:44:74). <strong>Lucie Delma<\/strong>s won the 200 butterfly (1:59.18). <strong>Hazal Ozkan<\/strong> won the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.09.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA&#8217;s <strong>Jada Duncan<\/strong> won the 200 free in 1:46.28, just ahead of Stoneburg (1:46.43). Duncan also won the 100 free (48.81) and 100 fly (52.27). <strong>Claudia Yovanovich<\/strong> won the 50 free (22.79) for the Bruins. <strong>Rosie Murphy<\/strong> had a four-second win in the 200 back (1:54.01).<\/p>\n<p>UCLA&#8217;s<strong> Josie Arbuckle, Gizem Guvenc, Fiona Schere<\/strong> and<strong> Ava Lachey<\/strong> won the 200 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>UC-San Diego&#8217;s <strong>Chloe Braun<\/strong> won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.63, just holding off Ozkan (1:00.68) and Corrigan (1:00.92). UCSD&#8217;s<strong> Edana Huang<\/strong> won the 500 free in 4:35.66.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s meet, Wisconsin&#8217;s <strong>Nathan Welker, Ben Wiegand, Charlie Jones<\/strong> and<strong> Luukas Vainio<\/strong> won the 400 medley relay in 3:09.98.<\/p>\n<p>Vainio won the 200 free in 1:34.38. Welker won the 100 backstroke in 47.44. Wiegand won the 50 free in 20.03 and 100 free in 43.93. Jones won the 500 free (4:24.61).<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin&#8217;s <strong>Dominik Mark Torok<\/strong> won the men&#8217;s 100 free in 9:08.43, ahead of UC-San Diego&#8217;s <strong>Zach Tower<\/strong> (9:09.62). Wisconsin&#8217;s <strong>Brayden Henkel<\/strong> won the 100 breaststroke (53.85). <strong>Enzo Solitario<\/strong> won the 200 fly in 1:44.72 and 200 IM (1:48.56).
