{"id":630876,"date":"2026-01-02T21:50:25","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=630876"},"modified":"2026-01-02T21:50:25","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T04:50:25","slug":"alvaro-granados-foteini-tricha-named-world-aquatics-water-polo-players-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/alvaro-granados-foteini-tricha-named-world-aquatics-water-polo-players-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Alvaro Granados, Foteini Tricha Named World Aquatics Water Polo Players of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alvaro Granados, Foteini Tricha Named World Aquatics Water Polo Players of the Year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s <strong>Alvaro Granados<\/strong> and <strong>Foteini Tricha<\/strong> of Greece were named World Aquatics\u2019 Water Polo Players of the Year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldaquatics.com\/news\/4424553\/granados-and-tricha-win-world-aquatics-water-polo-athlete-of-the-year-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both players led their teams to gold medals at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, Greece getting back to the women\u2019s summit for the first time since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Granados, 27, was named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-alvaro-granados-named-mvp-with-two-greek-all-stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the most valuable player by media in Singapore<\/a>. He scored 21 goals in the tournament, including five in a 15-13 win over Hungary in the final, Spain\u2019s first world title since 2022.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/water-polo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Water Polo News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spain won the Division I World Aquatics Men\u2019s Water Polo World Cup tournament in January in Romania, then claimed the final in April in Montenegro. Granados changed clubs this year, moving from his second stint at CN Athletic-Barceloneta to Italian giants Pro Recco.<\/p>\n<p>Tricha wasn\u2019t named MVP in Singapore, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-rita-keszthelyi-repeats-at-tournament-mvp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she was on the all-tournament team<\/a> as part of the Greek championship. Greece overcame a loss to Hungary in the first group-stage game, then avenged the loss in the final. Tricha scored 25 goals to power the Greek team, making her the high-scorer in the women\u2019s tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe played really good in this tournament,\u201d Tricha said in Singapore. \u201cWe deserved this gold. The only thing that I can say is that we have to continue showing this standard. There are many teams that are really good. The championships was really competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tricha is just 20 years old. She helped Greece\u2019s Under-20 team in a bronze medal at the World Aquatics U20 Championships in Brazil.
