BERLIN – A former East German doctor and a swim coach who admitted giving performance-enhancing drugs to young female swimmers were fined and convicted of causing bodily harm. Rolf Glaeser, who coached East Germany’s showcase Dynamo Berlin team from 1971-1984, was fined $4,000, and former team doctor Dieter Binus was fined $5,000, by the Berlin state court. It was the second verdict in cases dealing with the former communist country’s drive in the 1970s to create Olympic champions by giving young athletes’ anabolic steroids. Among the swimmers who received the drugs – some as young as 12 at the time – are 1980 Olympic medalist Christiane Sommer, who testified against Glaeser.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
