QUEBEC CITY, Canada, November 30. BRIAN Johns of Vancouver smashed a five-year-old Commonwealth record in the men\u2019s 200 meter individual medley on Friday at the Canadian Open and short course nationals swimming competition.<\/p>\n

Johns clocked one minute 55.42 seconds to eclipse the previous mark of 1:55.80 set by England\u2019s James Hickman in March 1998 and lowered his own national mark of 1:56.23 set at the national university championships this past March. The world short course record is 1:54.65 held jointly by Jani Sievinen of Finland and Attila Czene of Hungary.<\/p>\n

Johns, 20, split the first 100 meters in 54.70 which was under world record pace.<\/p>\n

"I definitely came here to swim fast and it\u2019s great to start the winter season this way,"\u2019 said Johns, who broke the 400 IM short course world record at the university nationals. "I was confident I could take it out very strong at the start with my butterfly and backstroke. In the water I could feel I was going very fast."<\/p>\n

This past summer at the world championships Johns made strides in the long course pool reaching finals in both IM events.<\/p>\n

"There\u2019s not a huge difference between short and long course swimming," said Johns. "Definitely my short course performances show my turns are world class. I need to take advantage of that more in the long course pool. But I\u2019m taking it one step at a time towards Athens (the Olympic Games). Tonight\u2019s performance was a real confidence booster."<\/p>\n

For the second straight day, the Toronto All Stars and Vancouver\u2019s UBC Dolphins set national relay marks.<\/p>\n

In the men\u2019s 4 X 100m freestyle relay, UBC with Johns, Mike Mintenko, Mark Johnston and Brent Hayden clocked 3:15.61 to eclipse its previous record of 3:17.40 set last year.<\/p>\n

In the women\u2019s 4 X 100 freestyle relay, Toronto clocked 3:41.79 to lower the 3:44.34 set by Montreal\u2019s CAMO Club last year. The Toronto swimmers were Jen Porenta Anna Lydall, Jennifer Button and Laura Nicholls.<\/p>\n

Three other swimmers earned their second individual gold in two days at the championships. Jennifer Carroll of Trois-Rivi\u00e8res, Que., won the women\u2019s 100 backstroke, Sean Sepulis of Victoria was first in the men\u2019s 100 backstroke and Brittany Reimer of Surrey, B.C., took gold in the women\u2019s 400 freestyle.<\/p>\n

Other winners in men\u2019s competition were Craig Hutchison of Toronto in the 50 freestyle and Rick Say of Calgary in the 400 freestyle. On the women\u2019s side, Nicholls took the 50 freestyle and Liz Warden of Toronto took the 200 IM.<\/p>\n
