ATLANTA, November 28. HIGH school dual meets are not supposed to produce record breaking swims, but the upcoming meet (December 9) between Georgia high school powers Westminster and Brookwood is likely to do just that, along with some interesting twists.<\/p>\n
The Brookwood Girls are the three time defending 5A state champs while the Westminster ladies are the three time defending 4A-A champions.<\/p>\n
The meet is going to be run at Westminster's campus in a 25-meter course. <\/p>\n
Westminster is an independent school and Brookwood is a public school so records in both classifications can be broken at the meet.<\/p>\n
Westminster features two of the most versatile senior swimmers in the state of Georgia: Elizabeth Hill (Pan-Pac Gold medal winner in the 4 x 200 free relay, national champion in the 200 fly and Pan Am Games gold medalist and record-holder in the 400 free) and Stanford-bound Katherine Bell (with national cuts in the 50 free, 100 breast and 200IM).<\/p>\n
Brookwood has a duo of its own in Amanda Weir and Andrea Hupman. Weir is currently ranked second in the world in the 100 meter freestyle with her record-breaking leadoff swim in the 4 x 100 free relay at the Pan Am games. The Northwestern University-bound Hupman is a freestyle and backstroke specialist and last year's state high school champion in the 50 and 100 free.<\/p>\n
Hill and Weir will be teammates and possibly roomates next year as incoming freshman for Jack Bauerle at the University of Georgia, but will swim head-to-head in the 200 free in the dual meet. Hill has gone 2:00 long course and Weir 2:01, so the National High School Short Course Meters records of 2:05 — 2:05.73 for public schools, 2:05.18 for independent schools — appear to be toast.
