The German swimmer went 3:54.33, downing the now 12-year-old record of <strong>Mireia Belmonte Garcia<\/strong> of 3:54.52 set in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Gose, the Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500 free and the 2022 long-course European champion in this event was more than two seconds ahead of Italian <strong>Simona Quadarella,<\/strong> who grabbed silver in 3:56.70. She rallied on the final 25 meters to get past Great Britain\u2019s <strong>Freya Colbert<\/strong> at the touch by .01 seconds and change the colors of their medals. But in a chaotic final, he pulled away after 300 meters and no one could catch him. The 25-year-old picked up easily the biggest individual title of his career, going 3:36.33 to win. It clubs some five seconds out of his all-time best.<\/p>\n<p>The native of Northern Ireland got to the wall .18 seconds ahead of <strong>Lukas Martens,<\/strong> the reigning Olympic champion second in 3:36.51. Ireland\u2019s <strong>Daniel Wiffen<\/strong> was third in 3:37.02.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth place went to <strong>Johannes Liebmann<\/strong> of Germany, setting the world junior record with a time of 3:37.39. That erases the standard set in 2021 by <strong>Matt Sates<\/strong> at 3:37.92.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zalan Sarkany<\/strong> of Hungary was sixth. Seven swimmers are clustered within .16 seconds behind the Frenchwoman.<\/p>\n<p>Three are tied for second, with Denmark\u2019s <strong>Martine Dambourg, <\/strong>Germany\u2019s <strong>Angelina Kohler <\/strong>and <strong>Roos Vanotterdijk<\/strong> of Belgium tied for second in 25.06. <strong>Maaike de Waard<\/strong> was fifth in 25.09, .10 up on <strong>Silvia Di Pietro.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Damborg\u2019s time lowers her European Junior Record of 25.20 from the morning. The world junior record is a further jump, owned by <strong>Claire Curzan<\/strong> at 24.55.<\/p>\n<p>A swim-off is required for eighth between Greece\u2019s <strong>Anna Ntountounaki<\/strong> and <strong>Neza Klancar<\/strong> of Slovenia. Italy was third after Deplano\u2019s opening leg, but Zazzeri went 20.56, the fastest of the race, to get in the lead. Italy won from Lane 2.<\/p>\n<p>The race was open for surprise medalists, with Germany not emerging from prelims and France and Great Britain not entered. Poland seized the opportunity with a back-half surge. They were in sixth at the halfway point, but a 20.71 from <strong>Kamil Sieradzki<\/strong> pulled them to third, and <strong>Mateusz Chowaniec<\/strong> got them up a spot to second in 21.00. <strong>Piotr Ludwiczak<\/strong> and <strong>Ksawery Masiuk<\/strong>\u00a0rounded out the team that went 1:23.63.<\/p>\n<p>Third was Croatia, the leader after prelims. <strong>Jere Hribar<\/strong> started them out in 20.70. <strong>Nikola Miljenic<\/strong> kept them second, but <strong>Bozo Puhalovic<\/strong> saw them drop to fifth. A 20.79 from <strong>Luka Cvetko<\/strong> pushed them back up to third in 1:23.79, .13 seconds up on Ukraine. The Ukrainians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/louisville-standout-nikita-sheremet-adds-world-junior-record-in-50-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">got a world junior record<\/a> off the front from <strong>Nikita Sheremet<\/strong> at 20.84, taking .05 off the 2019 record set by <strong>Kenzo Simons<\/strong>.
