\nAUSTIN, TX – Jack Roach, former director of the Texas Aquatics Swim Club and a 1988 U.S. National Team coach, has been named assistant coach of the Texas women’s swim team. The announcement was made Thursday by Texas Director of Women’s Athletics Jody Conradt. <\/p>\n
Roach, a resident of Austin, Texas, who was an assistant coach for the United States at both the 1998 World Championships in Perth and at the 1997 Pan Pacific Games, joins the Longhorn staff after nine seasons as the head coach and director of the Texas Aquatics Club (1990-present). The past four years, he served as director of the 400-swimmer club, with athletes at the age-group, national and masters levels. Roach also served as a part-time women’s swim coach at Texas from 1991-93 where he coached the UT breaststroke and individual medley swimmers. <\/p>\n
Roach replaces former UT assistant swim coach Cheryl Ridall who left Texas earlier this month to pursue other professional opportunities outside the coaching environment. <\/p>\n
“Jack was far and away my first choice as assistant coach,” said head coach Jill Sterkel. “Jack has the respect of club coaches across the country, he’s an excellent recruiter, and he’s an excellent technician. <\/p>\n
“The wisdom and maturity that Jack will add to this program is invaluable,” Sterkel continued. “He coaches the “total person”, not just the athlete in his swimmers.
