Diana Nyad to be Honored by City of Fort Lauderdale with Historic Marker<\/strong><\/p>\n

The City of Fort Lauderdale will host a ceremony on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Las Olas Oceanside Park to <\/span>unveil a Florida State Historic Marker honoring world-renowned endurance swimmer Diana Nyad<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ceremony will celebrate Nyad\u2019s legendary 111-mile swim from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, a feat she accomplished at age 64 after a 35-year pursuit. The marker will be placed at the Las Olas Beach Promenade entrance, where\u00a0 Nyad\u2019s connection to the ocean began as a child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Special Guest: <\/b>Tennis legend Chris Evert will join the celebration, alongside Nyad\u2019s Cuba Swim teammates, family, and friends. The event will highlight the teamwork and perseverance that defined Nyad\u2019s journey, in keeping with her global message: \u201cNever Ever Give Up.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDiana Nyad\u2019s story reminds us that determination knows no limits,\u201d said <\/span>Mayor Dean J. Trantalis. \u201cHer courage and perseverance have inspired people across the world \u2014 and it\u2019s especially meaningful that her journey began right here in Fort Lauderdale, where our community continues to celebrate those who dare to dream big.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

“This is not just my story,\u201d said Nyad. \u201cIt\u2019s the story of a team that never gave\u00a0 up, of a community that believed in the impossible and of a city that shaped my dreams from the very beginning.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The unveiling of this historical marker is not only a celebration of Nyad\u2019s <\/span>remarkable accomplishments but also a testament to the human spirit and the power of determination. The community, fans and media are invited to join in commemorating this momentous occasion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event is free and open to the public. Following the ceremony, the public is invited to stay for music and refreshments.<\/span><\/p>\n
