FLASH! Kate Douglass Takes Down Cate Campbell’s World Record in 100 Freestyle at World Cup<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a collegiate star at the University of Virginia, Kate Douglass<\/strong> established herself as a multi-event marvel. That identity was proved on Sunday night when Douglass clocked the latest world record of her career, this time in the 100-meter freestyle at the World Cup leg in Westmont, Illinois.<\/p>\n

After earning the top seed for the final, Douglass put everything into her night swim and emerged with a global standard of 50.19 for the 100 freestyle. That time cut .06 off the previous record of 50.25, set in 2017 by Australian Cate Campbell. Douglass’ previous best, according to the World Aquatics database, was the 50.73 she recorded at last year’s World Short Course Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n

Already the world-record holder in the 200 breaststroke, Douglass showed her versatility by excelling in a sprint-freestyle discipline. She pressed the pace from the start, splitting 11.27 for the opening 25 meters and going 23.88 through the midway point of the race. Douglass was .33 ahead of Campbell’s split from her world-record assault, and that early speed proved to be critical at the finish.<\/p>\n

“I feel like my first two races of the stop, I wasn\u2019t super happy with,” Douglass said, referring to the 100 IM and 200 breaststroke. “I wasn\u2019t sure if I was going to go faster in (the 100 free). I had a good prelims swim and so after I watched a few of my friends break world records, I thought I was just going to go for it tonight. Go out fast and see if I can hold on.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Douglass’ world record was the fourth of the Westmont stop, as Regan Smith tied her record in the 100 backstroke on Saturday, when Mollie O’Callaghan broke the global mark in the 200 freestyle. Earlier Sunday night, Kaylee McKeown set a world record in the 200 backstroke, an event that saw Smith also go under the previous world standard.<\/p>\n
