All 12 of the champions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-cup-carmel-day-one-finals-kaylee-mckeown-threatens-world-record-hubert-kos-beats-leon-marchand-in-200-backstroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from the first day of the meet last week in Carmel, Indiana<\/a>, are entered in their respective events on Friday, the opening day of 3 at FMC Natatorium.<\/p>\n<p>The mix of stars is slightly different this weekend \u2013 <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> is not in the meet, nor is <strong>Chad le<\/strong> <strong>Clos,<\/strong> while the mix of American collegians is slightly different. But a star-studded cast has made the trip to the Chicago area <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DP4rj7yEi5X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for more than just basketball<\/a>, with a couple of world records on alert.<\/p>\n<p>The action from the first morning prelims, which started with the slowest heats in the 400 freestyle.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2025\/world-aquatics-swimming-world-cup02-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the preliminary heats of the women\u2019s 400 free, <strong>Minna Abraham<\/strong> set the fastest time in 4:03.44. that would\u2019ve been good for sixth in Carmel. The top six finishers from Carmel are all entered in the final heat Friday night, led by winner <strong>Lani Pallister,<\/strong> the Kiwi duo of <strong>Erika Fairweather<\/strong> and <strong>Caitlin Deans,<\/strong> American <strong>Anna Peplowski,<\/strong> Canadian <strong>Mary-Sophie Harvey<\/strong> and British swimmer <strong>Freya Colbert. Bella Sims<\/strong> is also in the fastest heat.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s side, <strong>Luke Hobson<\/strong> laid down a marker that could get him on the podium, the American going 3:38.90. That would\u2019ve finished fifth in Carmel, where the winning time was <strong>Carson Foster\u2019s<\/strong> 3:37.80. Hobson was eighth in Carmel in 3:43.87.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the top five are back from Carmel, with Foster joined by runner-up <strong>Sam Short<\/strong> and fourth-place <strong>Kieran Smith.<\/strong> Marchand and <strong>Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> aren\u2019t swimming. But <strong>Lucas Henveaux<\/strong> and <strong>Zalan Sarkany<\/strong> are entered in the fastest heat.<\/p>\n<h4>Women\u2019s 50 backstroke<\/h4>\n<p>The showdown is set again in the women\u2019s 50 backstroke Friday night, though with the addition of <strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> to the mix.<\/p>\n<p>The top three from Carmel were the top three qualifiers again Friday, with <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> going 25.73 to lead the field. American <strong>Katharine Berkoff<\/strong> was second in 25.84, with <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> third in 25.87. McKeown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-cup-carmel-day-one-finals-kaylee-mckeown-threatens-world-record-hubert-kos-beats-leon-marchand-in-200-backstroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the race in Carmel<\/a> in 25.42. She\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-record-on-alert-as-stacked-field-gathers-for-womens-50-backstroke-at-world-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stalking the world record<\/a> in that event (<strong>Regan Smith\u2019s<\/strong> 25.23) and McKeown\u2019s own meet record of 25.36 from Shanghai last year. Smith is not entered in the event.<\/p>\n<p>But Walsh is, and after a stellar spring weekend to open the circuit, she\u2019s looking to see what she can do in the 50 back. She was fourth in 25.99 in prelims, .08 ahead of <strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong> of Canada. After setting the meet record in Carmel, she\u2019s eying a time under two minutes, with <strong>Summer McIntosh\u2019s<\/strong> world record 1:59.32 in her sights.<\/p>\n<p>Second was <strong>Brittany Castelluzzo<\/strong> of Australia, who finished fourth last week. That was a second and a half ahead of <strong>Rebecca Meder,<\/strong> who was third in Carmel. Second was American Van Mathias in 57.10. <strong>Shin Ohashi<\/strong> was third in 57.48, with <strong>Josh Matheny, Ilya Shymanovich, Brian Benzing<\/strong> and <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> following. Third was <strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong> of Canada in 24.00.<\/p>\n<p>In a tie for fourth at 24.02 were <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> and <strong>Marrit Steenbergen.<\/strong> The Aussie did the 50 back\/50 free double in Carmel, finishing second and third, respectively. Steenbergen did an even tougher 50 free\/100 IM pairing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Florine Gaspard<\/strong> of Belgium and Aussie <strong>Olivia Wunsch<\/strong> tied for sixth in 24.18. Eighth was <strong>Katharine Berkoff,<\/strong> .09 ahead of <strong>Sara Curtis<\/strong> for the last spot. American <strong>Chris Guiliano,<\/strong> who won in Carmel, finished sixth in 21.24, with countrymen <strong>Van Mathias<\/strong> second and <strong>Jack Alexy<\/strong> fifth.
