COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, November 21. THE Maryland women's swimming and diving team is in first place after Day One of the Terrapin Cup Invitational with 332.50 points. Richmond is in second (263.50) and Connecticut is in third (234.50). Western Kentucky (114) and William & Mary (97.50) round out the top five. <\/p>\n

The Terp men are in third place with 191 points after the first day, trailing Western Kentucky (262) and Connecticut (253). West Chester (183) and James Madison (119) round out the top five for the men. <\/p>\n

Junior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) had the women's only individual victory on the day, claiming first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.44) while slashing almost 10 seconds off her previous season-best time. The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Lindsey Jerdonek (Brecksville, Ohio), junior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.), junior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) and freshman Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.) won with an ACC-best time of 1:33.11. <\/p>\n

The Terps placed six women in the 50-yard freestyle finals. Weir took second with a season-best time of 23.20, while junior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty Kazakhstan) placed third (23.44), Jerdonek tied for fourth (23.80), Knepper finished sixth (23.81), senior Jenny Brian (Cockeysville, Md.) placed seventh (23.90) and Walter finished eighth (24.05). <\/p>\n

Sophomore Inbal Levavi (Ichad, Israel) placed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 2:03.39, while junior Chrissy Miller (South Seaside Park, N.J.) finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.02). <\/p>\n

Senior Mark Hill (Rye Brook, N.Y.) had the men's only victory of the day, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.42. Junior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.) placed fifth with his season-best time of 20.92, and freshman Kevin Ford (Sinking Spring, Pa.) finished sixth with a time of 21.10, a season-best time for him. <\/p>\n

Senior diver Steve Vigilante (Plano, Texas) took second on the 1-meter board (246.57), while junior Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.) placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:37.67 and senior Ari Limor (Givataym, Israel) finished eighth (4:47.16). The 400-yard medley relay team of junior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.), junior Tim Potter (West Deptford, N.J.), Fried and Hill finished third with a season-best time of 3:24.40.<\/p>\n

The Western Kentucky University swimming and diving team returned to the water today for preliminary competition on day one of the Maryland Terrapin Cup Invitational. WKU had several strong performances, led by senior tri-captain Marci Kacsir and sophomore Karl Swanson. Kacsir took first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 234.57, while Swanson captured the top spot in the 500 Free with a time of 4:36.08.<\/p>\n

On the women's side, freshman Jennifer Johnson started things off for the Lady Toppers with a ninth-place showing in the 500 Free. Sophomore Meredith Mountjoy followed with a ninth-place showing of her own in the 200 Individual Medley (2:09.28). Keeping with the trend, freshman Samantha Sawzak claimed ninth in the 50 Free, coming in at 24.13. Junior diver Trisha Nailor followed up Kacsir's effort by placing fifth in the 1-meter dive (196.23).<\/p>\n

Junior Nick Bracco followed up Swanson's first-place time in the 500 Free, by placing third in the 200 IM (1:54.20). Fellow Toppers Greg Strickler and Travano McPhee also earned top-10 finishes, placing sixth (1:55.04) and ninth (1:56.25), respectively. Senior Drew Aldridge followed by swimming a 21.00 in the 50 Free to claim fifth place. Junior Andy Ray closed out the day by taking fourth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 224.25.<\/p>\n
