{"id":621259,"date":"2025-08-21T01:00:34","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T08:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=621259"},"modified":"2025-08-21T01:00:34","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T08:00:34","slug":"highly-regarded-aussie-coach-richard-scarce-named-head-coach-of-sydney-university-swimming-performance-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/highly-regarded-aussie-coach-richard-scarce-named-head-coach-of-sydney-university-swimming-performance-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Highly Regarded Aussie Coach Richard Scarce Named Head Coach of Sydney University Swimming Performance Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Richard Scarce Named Head Coach of Sydney University Swimming Performance Centre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The resurgence of swimming in NSW continues with\u00a0<strong>Richard Scarce<\/strong>, a long-serving member of the Australian Dolphins coaching staff, appointed as the Head Coach of the Sydney University Swimming Performance Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The newly created position by the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS), will allow Mr. Scarce &#8211; who has been involved in multiple Olympic and World Championship campaigns over the last 13-years \u2013 to help NSW in its quest to reclaim its mantle as the powerhouse of Australian swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Scarce, who guided <strong>Cameron McEvoy<\/strong>\u00a0to two Olympic bronze medals, as well as plotting the careers of Olympians\u00a0<strong>Maximillian Giuliani<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Jenna Strauch<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alex Graham<\/strong>, said he\u2019s excited to relocate from his Gold Coast base to Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to get things established very quickly in terms of culture and environment,\u201d said Mr. Scarce when asked to identify his priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to build on what\u2019s already at Sydney University and hopefully attract athletes to the program \u2013 and I\u2019d like to do that sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to get some early results in my first year to get things underway because there\u2019s not much time until the LA Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat finetuning should allow us to be in the groove by the second year, and the third year will be all about getting athletes on the Australian team . . . having people on the podium, winning medals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coach Scarce said he was inspired to \u2018sign on\u2019 with Sydney University following his discussions with Swimming NSW CEO <strong>Kirsten Thomson OLY<\/strong>\u00a0and NSWIS High Performance Manager\u00a0<strong>Andy Burns\u00a0<\/strong>and the vision for the future in NSW. His resolve was galvanised after seeking insight from Swimming Australia\u2019s President\u00a0<strong>Chris Fydler OAM OLY<\/strong>\u00a0and the highly respected\u00a0<strong>Ron McKeon OLY.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took the goals and improvements of NSW into consideration when I spoke to Kirsten and Andy, and then Chris and Ron,\u201d said Mr Scarce. \u201cThe view was NSW has been a sleeping giant, and while it\u2019s on its way [to greater things] there\u2019s still lots of work to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been some promising results for NSW, including <strong>Chris Nesbit<\/strong> [former Australian and Great Britain national coach] overseeing Carlile taking out the National Age Club title earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a sign of what\u2019s happening, and if NSW can get a few more results like that I have no doubt things will snowball and I\u2019m keen to play my role. I\u2019m not impatient, but I am someone who likes to get things moving quickly. While the ship is turning, I\u2019d like to increase the rate of knots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Scarce was mentored by three of Australia\u2019s coaching greats &#8211; <strong>John Carew\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; who guided\u00a0<strong>Kieren Perkins OAM\u00a0<\/strong>to Olympic gold;\u00a0<strong>Laurie Lawrence<\/strong>, who coached Olympic gold medallists\u00a0<strong>Jon Sieben\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Duncan Armstrong OAM<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Doug Frost<\/strong>, who coached\u00a0<strong>Ian Thorpe AM.<\/strong> He learned from them the value of passion, energy and understanding how to draw the best out of athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe energy I bring is high, and I\u2019m very passionate about the sport &#8211; and Australia,\u201d Mr Scarce said. \u201cI have a good track record thus far, and that\u2019s a result of the athletes believing in me and me in them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe athletes at Sydney University should know my philosophy is I\u2019m not a closed book or a dictator. I just want us to get in together and get that culture, that environment, going and create the training group we want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy approach is to engage with everyone, and I also believe everyone deserves a go \u2013 particularly when they\u2019ve bought into the program; they have goals and are willing to fight to achieve them. And in me they have a coach who\u2019ll back them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned to get to the top in swimming you need to do your best work together. It\u2019s a team effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Scarce said his time with luminaries Carew, Lawrence and Frost reenforced his belief a swimmer needs one personal trait that\u2019s just as important as cutting edge systems, strategies, methodologies and science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeart,\u201d he said. \u201cThe small things, those one-percenters, are vital in a swimmer because they\u2019re what will allow them to push off when things get hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll bring what I bring to Sydney University, and I really look forward to working with the group. There\u2019s some great talent down there and, as I\u2019ve said, I also look forward to attracting swimmers to the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swimming NSW CEO Kirsten Thomson OLY, said:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome Richard to NSW and kick start the Sydney University Performance Centre.
