That’s the leading question ahead of the first night of finals at the TYR Summer Championships. The four-day meet is being held at the William Woollett Aquatic Center in Southern California, and is one of the final chances for American athletes to punch a ticket to the 2026 edition of Pan Pacs.

USA Swimming is selecting its Pan Pacs roster based on the results of multiple competitions from this summer – Nationals, World Championships, World University Games, TYR Championships and the World Junior Champs. The top-four times in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle from the aforementioned meets’ combined results will qualify. In other events, the top-two times will secure an invitation, although several third-fastest women’s times will likely receive a berth, since the American women will have greater flexibility than the U.S. men in reaching the 26-athlete roster cap.

Dressel will need to be faster than 21.68 in the final of the 50 freestyle to earn a nod to the Pan Pacific Champs. That time from Santo Condorelli currently ranks second among American men. In the morning prelims, Dressel clocked a mark of 22.00, which was the second-fastest of the session, behind the 21.63 of Australian Jamie Jack.

Also racing in the night session was Kieran Smith, the middle-distance standout who just missed a bid to the World Championships. Smith was the top seed in the 200 individual medley, showing his range.

Here is an event-by-event recap of the Day One finals:

Meet Page

Women’s 1500 Freestyle

Australian Tiana Kritzinger opened the finals session with a victory in the 1500 freestyle, as she covered her 30 laps in 16:16.61. That time was nearly two seconds clear of the 16:18.38 managed by fellow Aussie Molly Walker. Through 400 meters, Walker held a lead over her countrywoman, but Kritzinger took command at the 500-meter turn and gradually increased her advantage through the remainder of the race.

Ewing were the only swimmers to go under the two-minute barrier, with Lee picking up the win in 1:58.77. Lee was third through the first 50 meters, but took the lead on the second lap and never relinquished that advantage. Ewing put together a strong showing by touching in 1:59.57. Ewing previously competed for North Carolina State in the NCAA ranks, but has transferred to Arizona State for the 2025-26 season.

Event 7 Men 200 LC Meter Backstroke
==================================================================
        World: W 1:51.92  7/31/2009 Aaron Peirsol, USA
     American: A 1:51.92  7/31/2009 Aaron Peirsol, USA
    U.S. Open: O 1:53.08  7/11/2009 Aaron Peirsol, Longhorn
     Jr World: J 1:55.14 7/28/2017 Kliment Kolesnikov, RUS
     Pro Swim: P 1:55.04  2017      Xu Jiayu
    Name            Age Team              Prelims     Finals
==================================================================
                        === A - Final ===

  1 Se-Bom Lee       24 Australia-IT      2:00.99    1:58.77
    r:+0.55  28.11        58.29 (30.18)
        1:28.58 (30.29)     1:58.77 (30.19)
  2 JT Ewing         20 Sun Devil Swimmi  2:01.99    1:59.57
    r:+0.50  28.15        58.59 (30.44)
        1:29.41 (30.82)     1:59.57 (30.16)
  3 Krys Gorski      19 Ohio State Unive  2:02.16    2:00.86
    r:+0.77  28.16        58.53 (30.37)
        1:29.61 (31.08)     2:00.86 (31.25)
  4 Jackson Millard  21 Univ Louisville-  2:01.87    2:01.33
    r:+0.60  27.97        58.59 (30.62)
        1:30.05 (31.46)     2:01.33 (31.28)
  5 Jack Wilkening   21 Club Wolverine-M  2:02.99    2:01.36
    r:+0.66  27.99        58.51 (30.52)
        1:30.46 (31.95)     2:01.36 (30.90)
  6 Will Thompson    20 Cavalier Aquatic  2:01.42    2:01.69
    r:+0.66  28.44        59.12 (30.68)
        1:30.94 (31.82)     2:01.69 (30.75)
  7 Drew Huston      20 King Aquatic Clu  2:02.33    2:01.77
    r:+0.65  28.24        58.87 (30.63)
        1:30.32 (31.45)     2:01.77 (31.45)
  8 Luigi Franco     21 Tritons Aquatic-  2:02.90    2:04.17
    r:+0.71  28.74        59.84 (31.10)
        1:31.88 (32.04)     2:04.17 (32.29)

Women’s 50 Breaststroke

Australia’s quality night continued as Mia O’Leary and Sienna Harben occupied the top-two positions, with O’Leary emerging on top in 31.09. More important, Mathias now seems destined for next summer’s Pan Pacific Championships, as his time was faster than the 26.90 of Campbell McKean and the 26.92 of Michael Andrew from Nationals.

Once the World Junior Championships conclude later this month, USA Swimming will name the top-two finishers in the 50 breaststroke to Pan Pacs, and Mathias is almost certain to be one of those athletes. Mathias was out among the leaders in the one-lap event, but got stronger in the latter stages of the race, the gap clearly widening between Mathias and the field.

Beyond the 50 breaststroke, Mathias will be an intriguing watch in the 100 breaststroke later in the meet.
