{"id":617799,"date":"2025-07-23T09:52:41","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T16:52:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=617799"},"modified":"2025-07-23T09:52:41","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T16:52:41","slug":"world-championships-rita-keszthelyi-repeats-at-tournament-mvp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-rita-keszthelyi-repeats-at-tournament-mvp\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championships: Rita Keszthelyi Repeats at Tournament MVP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>World Championships: Rita Keszthelyi Repeats at Tournament MVP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s <strong>Rita Keszthelyi<\/strong> was named the most valuable player of the women\u2019s water polo tournament at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Of the seven players on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldaquatics.com\/news\/4320975\/greece-best-womens-water-polo-team-in-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all-tournament team voted by members\u00a0 of the media<\/a>, only gold medalist Greece had two representatives, with <strong>Ioanna Stamatopoulou<\/strong> named the top goalie and <strong>Foteini Tricha<\/strong> among the field players.<\/p>\n<p>American <strong>Emily Ausmus<\/strong> made it on the team, though bronze medalist Spain did not have a representative. Joining them are Japan\u2019s <strong>Yumi Arima,<\/strong> <strong>Agnese Cocchiere<\/strong> of Italy and <strong>Morgan McDowall<\/strong> of New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Keszthelyi continues an amazing run. But for the tournament, she scored 19 goals on 32 shots to go with 13 assists for the silver medalist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not angry. Obviously I\u2019m sad, but I\u2019m very proud of my team,\u201d Keszthelyi said after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-ioanna-stamatopoulou-leads-greece-to-gold-spain-tips-u-s-for-bronze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wednesday\u2019s 12-9 loss to Greece in the final<\/a>. \u201cWe did what we could today, and this was the maximum. So I think we should keep our heads high and be proud of ourselves, but also we have to stay humble and know that we have to work more to step one step forward. Obviously, we are not going to give up. We\u2019ll keep fighting and we just want to win games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stamatopoulou and Greece allowed 67 goals in seven games. She didn\u2019t play in the group stage against Croatia, but she shined with six saves in an 8-7 win over Australia in the quarterfinals, 11 stops in a 14-10 win over the United States in the semifinals and 16 in the final victory over Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s the best goalkeeper in the tournament,\u201d Greek captain <strong>Eleftheria Plevritou<\/strong> said. \u201cShe deserves it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tricha, aged 20, was the leading scorer for the tournament, pouring in 25 goals on 38 shots (66 percent). She added 10 assists and 13 blocks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis doesn\u2019t matter at all. I really care about the gold more,\u201d Tricha said about the top scorer honor. \u201cThe goals are an outcome of the system of the team. Everyone\u2019s passing, when the ball comes to me, I only think about what I have to do correctly. If it\u2019s to shoot, then I shoot. It\u2019s an outcome of the system and it\u2019s a team effort. My teammates are great, they can find me easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arima scored 23 goals on 52 shots. She was second in scoring in leading Japan to an eighth-place finish. She was also on the all-tournament squad at the 2023 edition in Fukuoka.<\/p>\n<p>Ausmus, still just 19, scored 17 goals on 31 shots to lead the Americans to the bronze-medal match, where they fell to Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Cocchiere scored 20 goals, second to teammate <strong>Chiara Ranalli<\/strong> and fourth in the tournament, as Italy finished seventh.<\/p>\n<p>McDowall scored 19 goals for New Zealand, which finished 10th.
