{"id":617768,"date":"2025-07-22T20:04:27","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T03:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=617768"},"modified":"2025-07-22T20:04:27","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T03:04:27","slug":"usopc-changes-policy-on-transgender-athletes-in-womens-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usopc-changes-policy-on-transgender-athletes-in-womens-events\/","title":{"rendered":"USOPC Changes Policy on Transgender Athletes in Women&#8217;s Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>USOPC Changes Policy on Transgender Athletes in Women&#8217;s Events<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) changed its policy and transgender athletes will no longer be able to compete in the Olympic or Paralympic Games in women&#8217;s events, according to a memo obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/us-olympic-paralympic-officials-bar-transgender-women-competing\/story?id=123978340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The change stems from President Trump&#8217;s February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lia-thomas-records-erased-as-penn-bans-transgender-athletes-from-womens-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive order<\/a>, which mandates enforcement of schools and athletic associations that &#8220;deny women single-sex sports and single-sex locker rooms,&#8221; according to the policy document.<\/p>\n<p>The memo to the Team USA community from USOPC President <strong>Gene Sykes<\/strong> and CEO <strong>Sarah Hirshland<\/strong> stated, &#8220;As a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an update to its athlete safety policy, the committee didn&#8217;t use the word &#8220;transgender&#8221; but stated its revised policy &#8220;emphasizes the importance of ensuring fair and safe competition environments for women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The USOPC is committed to protecting opportunities for athletes participating in sport.
