THE No. 6 University of Florida men's swimming and diving team won the final event of the evening to pull out a victory against No. 7 Georgia, while the No. 2 Gator women's swimming and diving team suffered its first defeat of the season by the third-ranked Bulldogs on Thursday evening at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.

Men’s Meet:
Men's Final Scores
#6 Florida 125
#7 Georgia 118

The score was tied at 75 after eight events and Florida pulled ahead with a provisional qualifying win in the 200-yard backstroke (1:46.96) by senior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), which was followed by sophomore Ryan Lochte’s (Daytona Beach, Fla.) provisional qualifying time win in the 500-yard freestyle (4:23.84) to give the Gators a 100-88 lead.

The Gators started off well with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. Kellam, senior Ansel Tjin-A-Tam (Paramaribo, Suriname), Mangabeira and Sioui won the race with a time of 3:19.28.

Jayme, seeing his first action in more than a month, won a pair of individual events: the 50-yard free (20.46) and the 100-yard free (44.88). Lochte swam times provisional times in both the 200-yard individual medley (1:48.71) as well as the 500-yard free (4:23.84) in winning both.

Junior Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) won the one-meter (347.85) for the fourth time in as many tries this season, while Sioui (1:38.93) and Wiebeck (1:38.99) each posted provisional marks in the 200-yard free and finished second and third, respectively.

The Florida men’s team won eight of the 13 events, with the 400-yard freestyle relay team of junior Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil), junior Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.), senior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) and junior Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) turning in a time of 3:00.62 to win the event by more than two seconds over Georgia and earn the victory for the Gators.

Georgia junior Robert Margalis, who missed last Saturday's Michigan meet due to illness, was still battling sickness and clocked an NCAA consideration time by winning the men's 200-yard freestyle, while sophomore Damien Alleyne finished fourth in 1:40.67. Margalis was involved in one of the tightest races all day – the final 25 yards of the men's 500-yard freestyle. Florida's Lochte swam a 24.00 in the final leg to out-touch Margalis for first. The Bulldog finished second with a B-cut time of 4:24.01, just 0.17 of a second behind Lochte.

The Bulldogs took three of the top four spots in the 200-yard butterfly, led by Lam with a provisional time of 1:47.58 for the victory. Andrew Mahaney finished third, followed by Brandon Cover in fourth.

Freshman Chris Colwill took top honors on the 3-meter springboard after finishing second on the 1-meter. Junior Todd Avery claimed a third-place finish on the 1-meter and finished fourth on the 3-meter.

"We really had some big time performances on the men's side, particularly Randy Lam," added Bauerle. "Under the circumstances, Robert really swam well. He had a real battle with Lochte; they are two of the top swimmers in the country right now. The level of swimming was terrific. Chris Colwill did a great job winning the 3-meter diving event."

The Florida men's team won eight of the 13 events, with the 400-yard freestyle relay team of junior Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil), junior Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.), senior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) and junior Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) turning in a time of 3:00.62 to win the event by more than two seconds over Georgia and earn the victory for the Gators.

The Bulldogs won the next two events to go ahead 114-112, setting up the final showdown in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Women’s Meet:
Women’s Final Scores
#3 Georgia 135
#2 Florida 108

Georgia sophomore Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) won the 200-yard breaststroke with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:14.03. Senior Sara McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) won the 500-yard free (4:47.11) and the 1,000-yard free (9:39.55), the latter a provisional time.

Senior Nicole Bolt (Orlando, Fla.) took top honors in the three-meter with a score of 297.14 as the Gators took the top three spots in the event. Sophomore Jessica Ranieri (Huntington Valley, Pa.) was second (289.05) and senior Kristen Connor (Gainesville, Fla.) was third (283.05). Bolt also won the one-meter (275.62).

Georgia sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) won the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.46) with a provisional time, while freshman Leah Retrum (Columbus, Ohio) was right behind in second with another NCAA time (1:59.75).

"I think Laura Conway and Julie Hardt changed the meet for us," added Bauerle. "We thought Florida was going to be stronger in the distance, and we came up with some great swims that really turned the meet in our direction."

Mary DeScenza led a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, as the sophomore posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:46.40. Joyce took second in 1:47.89 as the remaining six swimmers posted NCAA B-cuts. Joyce added to the Lady Bulldogs' point total with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with an A-cut time of 49.30. Georgia swept the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, all in NCAA provisional time, with senior Mabry leading the way in 23.05, followed by Andrea Georoff and Paige Kearns in second and third, respectively.

"DeScenza was great as always. We can pretty much put her anywhere," said Bauerle. "Kara Lynn was great as well. Andrea Georoff and Neka really came through for us with some big time swims."

Six more NCAA provisional times were posted in the 500-yard freestyle, including Conway, who touched the wall in 4:51.17 to finish third. Haley Chura collected a third-place finish and an NCAA B-cut time of 2:00.33 in the 200-yard backstroke.

"It was an amazing meet on both sides," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "The swims were great, obviously, but we had great effort. It was great to get a win; it has been a couple years since we got a win against their women's team. They are a great team across the board. For the guys, we are disappointed. We got it down to the last relay. We gave it a great run, and I could not be happier with the effort. Even though there was disappointment on the end of that one, that is college swimming at its best.

"We changed our (women's) lineup in a way we were hoping (Florida) was not expecting," offered Bauerle. "We knew had to do something a little different to win the meet."

The rest of the provisional qualifying marks by the women on the evening: Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica) (200-yard freestyle, 1:49.71, sixth; 500-yard freestyle, 4:48.23, third), Ashley Carusone (Gainesville, Fla.) (200-yard butterfly, 2:01.34, fourth; 500-yard freestyle, 4:51.81, fourth), Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas) (100-yard free, 51.17, fifth; 200-yard freestyle, 1:48.15, third), Farrell (50-yard freestyle, 23.53, fourth), Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland) (100-yard free, 50.76, fourth; 200-yard freestyle, 1:49.54, fourth), Rebecca Harper (Holmdel, N.J.) (200-yard butterfly, 1:59.44, third), Katie McCann (Walpole, Mass.) (200-yard individual medley, fifth), McLarty (200-yard individual medley, 2:02.55, third), Retrum (200-yard individual medley, 2:04.20, sixth), Jamie Tannhauser (Seattle, Wash.) (500-yard freestyle, 4:52.20, fifth), Brittany Johnson (Winston Salem, N.C.) (200-yard freestyle, 1:50.72, seventh), 400-yard freestyle relay team of Atkinson, Gibney, Mary Uhle (Sankt Ingbert, Germany), Christine Woodruff (Orlando, Fla.),
