MADISON, Wis, November 12. UNIVERSITY of Wisconsin senior Bethany Pendleton and junior Adam Mania have each been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week by the Conference Wednesday. It is the second such honor for Mania in his career and the first for Pendleton.<\/p>\n
A total of four Badger swimmers have now received swimmer of the week honors from the Big Ten this season. Senior Matt Marshall and junior Carly Piper had previously earned the award.<\/p>\n
Pendleton, a native of Hood River, Ore., finished first in the 400-yard individual medley in helping the 12th-ranked Badgers defeat No. 14 Indiana 142-100 last Friday. Her time of 4:18.31 easily broke the UW Natatorium pool record of 4:20.71 in the event. Pendleton was also a member of the first-place 400-yard medley relay squad that set a new pool mark with a time of 3:45.71. In addition, she swam a leg on the 400-yard freestyle relay that took top honors (3:23.78). Her 400 IM time and the 400 free relay mark each achieved NCAA \u201cB\u201d cut standards.<\/p>\n
Mania, a Hickman, Neb., native, was in on three pool records as No. 10 Wisconsin edged the 21st-ranked Hoosiers 117-114 on the men\u2019s side. Mania opened the meet by accomplishing the rare distinction of setting two new pool marks in the same event. His 100-yard backstroke split of 48.89 during the opening leg of the 400-yard medley relay helped UW win the event in a time of 3:18.45. He followed up the effort by setting a new standard in the 200 backstroke (1:47.39) as well as finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.40).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
