NCAA Settlement Just Save\u2014or Endanger\u2014College Swimming &amp; Diving?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1153\">With federal <strong>Judge Claudia Wilken<\/strong> approving the $2.8 billion agreement on June 6, 2025 (see <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/judge-officially-approves-historic-house-settlement\/\">&#8220;Judge Offically Approves Historic House Settlement&#8221;<\/a><\/span> ), schools across the country are preparing to enter a new era of college sports.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1153\">While much of the focus has been on how football and basketball programs will manage revenue sharing and NIL reform, the changes are just as significant\u2014if not more\u2014for Olympic sports. That includes swimming, diving, and water polo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1720\">So, what does this all mean for aquatics? The answer depends on how schools respond\u2014and how fast they act.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1763\"><strong>What&#8217;s Changed? A Quick Breakdown<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1799\">Under the terms of the settlement:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1799\">Schools may now <strong data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1878\">share up to $20.5 million\/year in revenue with athletes<\/strong>, beginning July 1, 2025. This cap is expected to increase 4% annually<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1799\"><strong data-start=\"1954\" data-end=\"1995\">Scholarship caps have been eliminated<\/strong>, replaced by sport-specific roster limits. The reality is more complicated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2661\" data-end=\"2914\">Most Division I athletic departments are expected to direct 80\u201390% of their new revenue-sharing capacity toward football and basketball, leaving Olympic sports to fend for the remainder.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2661\" data-end=\"2914\">In the wake of budget pressures, several institutions are already making cuts. See recent coverage:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3385\" data-end=\"3778\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"cursor-pointer\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/roster-caps-incoming-swimming-set-for-tough-transition-to-new-era\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"3388\" data-end=\"3567\">Roster Caps Incoming: Swimming Set for Tough Transition to New Era<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><br data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3570\" \/><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"cursor-pointer\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ucla-athletics-again-faces-hard-choices-will-history-repeat-for-aquatic-sports\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"3573\" data-end=\"3778\">UCLA Athletics Again Faces Hard Choices\u2014Will History Repeat for Aquatic Sports?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3780\" data-end=\"3816\">Early Cuts Have Already Happened<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3818\" data-end=\"4082\"><strong>Cal Poly<\/strong>, <strong>Grand Canyon<\/strong>, <strong>UTEP<\/strong> (tennis), and other schools have cited financial constraints and anticipated costs from the House settlement when discontinuing swimming and diving.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3818\" data-end=\"4082\">These decisions foreshadow the risk for mid-major programs with limited donor support or sponsorship options.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3818\" data-end=\"4082\">Despite these challenges, the current structure is arguably <em data-start=\"4195\" data-end=\"4203\">better<\/em> than what existed before the settlement.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how aquatics programs can not only survive\u2014but thrive\u2014in the post-settlement landscape:<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4430\" data-end=\"4479\">1. <strong data-start=\"4437\" data-end=\"4479\">Create Sport-Specific Excellence Funds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4481\" data-end=\"4705\">Swimming and Diving teams should launch their own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/subscribe\/checkout?donate=Cal-Poly-Swimming\/-Diving\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">targeted fundraising<\/span><\/a> arms to underwrite scholarships, travel, and new revenue-sharing obligations.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4887\" data-end=\"4924\">2. <strong data-start=\"4894\" data-end=\"4924\">Leverage NIL the Right Way<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4926\" data-end=\"5184\">The newly formed clearinghouse brings transparency to NIL deals. This opens the door for <strong>swimwear, training gear, nutrition<\/strong>, and<strong> wellness brands<\/strong> to sponsor NCAA athletes with confidence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4926\" data-end=\"5184\">Bundle NIL with digital content and signage to offer brands more value.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5186\" data-end=\"5222\">3. <strong data-start=\"5193\" data-end=\"5222\">Use the LA28 Olympic Halo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5224\" data-end=\"5485\">Paris 2024 is in the rearview mirror, but the build-up to the <strong data-start=\"5286\" data-end=\"5320\">Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games<\/strong> is already driving momentum. Schools with Olympians, national team members, or Trials qualifiers should highlight those pathways in donor and sponsor conversations.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5665\" data-end=\"5717\">4. <strong data-start=\"5672\" data-end=\"5717\">Coordinate with National Governing Bodies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5719\" data-end=\"5936\">USA Swimming, USA Diving, and USA Water Polo are invested in preserving the collegiate pipeline. Programs should explore co-funded grants or performance stipends in partnership with these NGBs to offset budget strain.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5938\" data-end=\"5978\">5. <strong data-start=\"5945\" data-end=\"5978\">Prepare for Title IX Scrutiny<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5980\" data-end=\"6222\">As departments reallocate budgets, they\u2019ll need to maintain equity across men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams.
