{"id":614118,"date":"2025-06-07T10:16:56","date_gmt":"2025-06-07T17:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=614118"},"modified":"2025-06-07T10:16:56","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T17:16:56","slug":"cscaa-joins-organizations-calling-for-house-settlement-clarity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cscaa-joins-organizations-calling-for-house-settlement-clarity\/","title":{"rendered":"CSCAA Joins Organizations Calling for House Settlement Clarity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CSCAA Joins Organizations Calling for House Settlement Clarity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has joined three other coaching associations calling for answers on what post-House settlement athletics will look like.<\/p>\n<p>The final House agreement was finalized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/judge-officially-approves-historic-house-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late Friday night<\/a>. CSCAA responded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscaa.org\/news\/icacsettlementresponse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with a joint letter<\/a>, released with the American Volleyball Coaches Association, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.<\/p>\n<p>Among the chief concerns are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0definition of student-athletes\u2019 status as employees or some other category, which remains unanswered<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0concerns about college sports \u201cdisproportionately benefit(ing) a small fraction of the NCAA student-athlete population while jeopardizing opportunities for others,\u201d namely all the revenue going to football and basketball<\/li>\n<li>questions of Title IX compliance and where it falls within the NCAA\u2019s diminished oversight and the new College Sports Commission, specifically how the gender equity it requires will be applied to payments and roster allocations<\/li>\n<li>calling on Congress to step in and legislate on such issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CSCAA has consistently prioritized the need to \u201cprotect and maintain:\u201d That is, to protect Olympic sports by \u201cestablish proportional spending targets by classification to safeguard meaningful investment\u201d in sports that are not football and basketball, and to maintain the current NCAA sports sponsorship requirements for schools that have football so that universities don\u2019t cut everything but the prime revenue-generating sport.<\/p>\n<p>From the letter:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We are concerned that the new financial obligations placed on schools will force administrators to divert attention and resources away from non-football and non-basketball sports\u2014the very programs in which the majority of NCAA student-athletes participate. This is no hypothetical. Budget cuts and program eliminations have already occurred in anticipation of today\u2019s decision, and more are likely to follow. Furthermore, the settlement leaves unaddressed the critical issues of employment classification for student-athletes and the application of Title IX, creating further uncertainty and risk for our sports programs in particular.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The future of college sports must not disproportionately benefit a small fraction of the NCAA student-athlete population while jeopardizing opportunities for others.
