U.S. Nationals, Night 3: Quintin McCarty Edges Shaine Casas for 50 Back Win<\/strong><\/p>\n

The long dominant American male backstroke program approaches the summer of 2025 without many of its biggest names. It will also do so with less recent dominance that at any time in the last two decades.<\/p>\n

New faces need to step up. Enter Quintin McCarty.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

McCarty won the men\u2019s 50 backstroke in 24.34, edging Shaine Casas<\/strong> by a tenth of a second to deny Casas his second win of the night.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a best time for the 21-year-old and fourth-fastest in the world this year, with Casas having one of the quicker ones. It completes an NC State sweep in the 50 backstroke events, with Katharine<\/strong> Berkoff<\/strong> having won the women\u2019s race in an American record<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It was a lot of fun,” McCarty said. “I think that the whole field out there, especially backstroke in general for the US, has always been very, very strong. And it feels good to be a part of that crew. Everybody in that heat have thrown down fast times throughout the years. I remember racing some of those guys, even I was 13-14, 15-16, so all the competitors out there just did a really, really good job.”<\/p>\n
