{"id":612137,"date":"2025-05-19T08:26:03","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T15:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=612137"},"modified":"2025-05-19T13:01:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T20:01:31","slug":"bbc-to-air-documentary-containing-allegations-of-toxic-environment-during-jon-rudds-regime-at-plymouth-leander","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bbc-to-air-documentary-containing-allegations-of-toxic-environment-during-jon-rudds-regime-at-plymouth-leander\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC To Air Documentary Containing Allegations Of &#8220;Toxic Environment&#8221; During Jon Rudd&#8217;s Regime At Plymouth Leander"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>BBC To Air Documentary Containing Allegations Of &#8220;Toxic Environment&#8221; During Jon Rudd&#8217;s Regime At Plymouth Leander<\/h4>\n<p>The BBC is airing a TV documentary programme that features allegations from swimmers who say &#8220;they experienced bullying, a toxic training environment and controlling food culture&#8221; during <strong>Jon Rudd&#8217;s<\/strong> tenure at <strong>Plymouth Leander<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Among them is <strong>Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong> who told BBC Panorama that<strong>\u00a0Rudd&#8217;s<\/strong> regime &#8220;made me for a while and then it broke me.&#8221; Plymouth Leander and Plymouth College ran a partnership for many years from the early 2000s with Meilutyte moving there from Lithuania to join forces with Rudd. She went on to win an historic 100m breaststroke title at London 2012 when she was 15.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn4gmm2zv8no\">Link to BBC Sport article<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She returned to her home country to be coached by <strong>Paulius Andrijauskas<\/strong> in March 2017 before spending time with <strong>David Marsh<\/strong> and <strong>Team Elite<\/strong> the following year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">According to the BBC, Rudd &#8211; who is the chair of the <strong>World Swimming Coaches Association<\/strong> &#8211; faced allegations of &#8220;bullying and verbal abuse&#8221; during his time at the Plymouth Leander club in south-west England but no action was taken by governing body <strong>Swim England.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BBC Sport wrote: &#8220;We have found that Swim England, the governing body, did not act on a confidential 2012 investigation which ruled Rudd should be suspended after hearing evidence about his behaviour from 17 witnesses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Swim England chief executive <strong>Andy Salmon<\/strong> said he did not know why Rudd had not been suspended, but offered an apology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jon-rudd-to-step-down-after-8-years-at-swim-ireland-heading-to-saudi-arabia\/\">It was announced earlier this month<\/a> that Rudd was stepping down as Swim Ireland&#8217;s national performance director after eight years in the rule during which <strong>Daniel Wiffen<\/strong> and <strong>Mona McSharry<\/strong> collected three Olympic medals at <strong>Paris 2024<\/strong>. <strong>Swimming World<\/strong> has contacted Rudd about the allegations and are yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n<p>BBC Panorama also says it &#8220;has found evidence of a bullying culture at <strong>Royal Wolverhampton School Swimming Club<\/strong>,&#8221; where <strong>Matt Richards<\/strong> and <strong>Alice Dearing<\/strong> trained as youngsters.<\/p>\n<h3>Swim England Statement<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Swim England<\/strong> has issued a statement, saying:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The experiences that are shared as part of the Panorama programme are deeply concerning and we are grateful to those who have come forward \u2013 recognising fully the courage it takes for those individuals to speak out publicly. We want to be clear: we are committed to meaningful and lasting change. The issues highlighted do not reflect the culture we aspire to as an organisation and for all of our sports, nor the values we stand for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the end of last year, we launched our new strategy with a commitment to lead and serve an aquatics community to enable safe, enjoyable and successful experiences. Creating a safe environment for everyone is not only a priority \u2013 it is a responsibility we take seriously.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cultural transformation is essential, and it must be grounded in our core values which includes doing what is right for all those who take part in our sports at every level.\u00a0In 2024, a new CEO took leadership of Swim England. We also\u00a0<a title=\"Swim England publishes findings of independent listening research\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org\/swimengland\/listening-report-published\/\">published the Listening Report<\/a>, which was a pivotal moment for everybody associated with Swim England.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It gave us absolute clarity and a clear focus on how we must improve and became the foundation to our new approach and strategy. As part of this work, <a title=\"Statement regarding a review of historical cases\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org\/swimengland\/statement-regarding-a-review-of-historical-cases\/\">we have also now commissioned a review of historical cases spanning two decades<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have also invested in a digital safeguarding case management system and continue to invest into improved digital systems, educational resources, as well as training and support. We believe everyone in aquatics should be free from the risk of harm so that they can experience the joy of participating. Abuse, mistreatment, harm, and a culture of fear have no place in our sports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If anyone has any concerns past or present, we urge them to come forward. Please <a title=\"Report a concern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org\/swimengland\/how-raise-concern-complaint\/\">get in touch with our Safeguarding &amp; Welfare team<\/a> or the police if it is of a criminal nature. As an activity and sport enjoyed by millions of people each week, swimming can have such a positive and uplifting impact on individuals, communities and the health of the nation. We would like to thank those within our community, and beyond, who give positive experiences every day and thank them for supporting us on this important journey of change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to be transparent about our progress and remain accountable as we move forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Swim Ireland Statement<\/h3>\n<p>Swim Ireland released the following statement, saying there was &#8220;no suggestion or indication of welfare issues\u201d during Rudd&#8217;s eight-year tenure as NPD and that he&#8217;d fully cooperated with an internal assessment following contact from Swim England.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content un-no-sidebar-layout\">\n<div class=\"row-container\">\n<div class=\"row row-parent style-light double-top-padding double-bottom-padding\">\n<p>&#8220;In September 2023, Swim England advised Swim Ireland of an independent review of a 2012 report concerning Plymouth Leander Swimming Club where Jon Rudd was Head Coach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Upon Swim Ireland requesting further details, Swim England issued the following correspondence: \u201cthat specific case was more for information and records only, rather than any need for specific action on your [Swim Ireland\u2019s] end.\u201d And further; \u201ccase files don\u2019t get shared unless there is specific\/threat which justifies it.\u201d Swim Ireland never received the independent review or the original report from Swim England and have heard nothing further from them on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite Swim England indicating that no action was required by Swim Ireland, Swim Ireland conducted its own internal assessment led by our Head of Safeguarding. Jon fully cooperated with this process. There has been no suggestion or indication of welfare issues during Jon\u2019s tenure with Swim Ireland. Furthermore, towards the end of 2022, a thorough independent Sport Ireland Culture Review was completed with our Performance Department that involved staff, coaches and included meetings with athletes. This Culture Review raised no concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jon resigned his role with Swim Ireland to take up a position of Performance Director at Saudi Olympic &amp; Paralympic Committee.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The welfare and support of swimmers is a primary focus for Swim Ireland.
