{"id":609555,"date":"2025-04-08T01:45:17","date_gmt":"2025-04-08T08:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=609555"},"modified":"2025-04-08T01:47:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T08:47:58","slug":"ollie-morgan-talks-rapid-progress-a-thriving-combination-in-birmingham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ollie-morgan-talks-rapid-progress-a-thriving-combination-in-birmingham\/","title":{"rendered":"Ollie Morgan Talks Rapid Progress, Nudging His British Record &#038; A Thriving Combination In Birmingham"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Ollie Morgan Talks Rapid Progress, Nudging His British Record &amp; A Thriving Combination In Birmingham<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ollie Morgan<\/strong> has come a long way since his first <strong>British Championships<\/strong> in 2022.\u00a0Then 18, he made two finals that year at Ponds Forge as he finished sixth and seventh in the 50 and 100 back respectively after which he made huge progress.<\/p>\n<p>A year later Morgan swept the three backstroke events in the same pool to qualify for the World Championships in Fukuoka where he missed the two-length final by one place and 0.05. He also led off the Great Britain men\u2019s medley relay that finished fifth.<\/p>\n<p>On to 2024 and Morgan took another giant step as he lowered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/british-trials-day-2-finals-oli-morgan-lowers-liam-tancocks-british-100-back-record-to-52-70-books-ticket-to-paris\/\">British 100 back record to 52.70<\/a> at the Olympic trials in London. With that, he cut 0.03 from the previous standard of 52.73 held by <strong>Liam Tancock<\/strong> since the <strong>2009 World Championships<\/strong> when Morgan was six. I\u2019ve not just matured as a person, but as an athlete as well in terms of dealing with these pressures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, big year, it\u2019s an Olympic year, there\u2019s so much that you can miss out on going into trials. I put so much pressure on myself to make the team and on how I was going to perform. Now it\u2019s kind of taking that step back with that experience I\u2019ve gained and kind of trusting what I\u2019ve done. I trusted what I\u2019d done before but it was in a different environment &#8211; I\u2019d never surrounded myself with qualifying for an Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then the experience you gain at the Games just changes you almost. Not that I don\u2019t feel pressure anymore \u2013 I obviously feel pressure and if you\u2019re not feeling pressure it obviously doesn\u2019t mean enough to you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s just the experience that I\u2019ve gained and the training we\u2019ve done and the confidence that we\u2019ve built has just set me up in a really good place to perform. And I\u2019m excited to race and not kind of feeling like my stomach\u2019s going to fall out. It\u2019s a good place to be \u2013 we\u2019re loving it and just trying to push the limit as much as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Rattling His British Record &amp; A Thriving Combination In Birmingham<\/h3>\n<p>Morgan returns to London for the national championships which run from 15-20 April at the Aquatic Centre with the six-day event doubling as trials for the World Championships in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>In the last couple of months Morgan has delivered performances that hint at fine times to come that could bring with them further tilts at rewriting the record books.<\/p>\n<p>He went within 0.01 of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ollie-morgan-rattles-british-100-back-record-at-bucs-championships-wiffen-twins-share-the-podium\/\">British 100 back standard in 52.71<\/a> to go top of the 2025 rankings as he completed the backstroke treble at the <strong>BUCS Championships<\/strong> in February.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matt-richards-comes-through-ahead-of-guy-mcmillan-in-200-free-thriller-in-edinburgh\/\">followed that up with 52.97<\/a> at the <strong>Edinburgh International Meet<\/strong> in March along with a 24.83 effort over 50m.<\/p>\n<p>The BUCS performance was a confidence boost given he wasn\u2019t tapered or rested for what was his first race since short-course worlds in December 2024 bar one day off before the start of the meet.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_609558\" style=\"width: 279px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-609558\" data-attachment-id=\"609558\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ollie-morgan-talks-rapid-progress-a-thriving-combination-in-birmingham\/ollie-morgan\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ollie-Morgan-scaled.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1707\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS R3&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1712148244&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;400&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;3200&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.0008&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Ollie Morgan\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Ollie Morgan: Photo Courtesy: Morgan Harlow, Aquatics GB&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ollie-Morgan-700x500.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ollie-Morgan-1024x683.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-609558\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ollie-Morgan-700x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"192\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-609558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ollie Morgan: Photo Courtesy: Morgan Harlow, Aquatics GB<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was pretty shocked to be that fast,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was quite annoying to be that close and to not have just dipped the other way but I think in terms of the things we\u2019d been working on, it kind of all came together there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morgan is coached by <strong>Gary Humpage<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Birmingham<\/strong> where he\u2019s in the final year of a Sports Coaching degree.<\/p>\n<p>A swim teaching module entails a trip every Tuesday to teach Stage 1 and 2 lessons to a group of seven and eight year olds. It has also involved giving a speech in front of all the children and teachers once they learned he\u2019d competed at Paris 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Given he split his final year at university so he could focus on his Olympic preparations, it\u2019s proving to be demanding with Morgan studying almost full-time while training and racing.<\/p>\n<p>Once he\u2019s graduated he plans to stay on in Birmingham rather than join one of the Aquatics GB performance centres. There have been conversations about moving elsewhere but in Morgan\u2019s eyes \u2013 \u201cdon\u2019t fix what\u2019s not broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morgan arrived in the midlands city at 18, eight years after he started competing at <strong>Ludlow Swimming Club<\/strong> in Shropshire, a county in the west midlands of England which borders Wales.<\/p>\n<p>From swimming three times a week with no gym work, Morgan had to adapt to a full programme of eight sessions per week plus dryland training.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of Morgan, Humpage and the University of Birmingham is one that\u2019s working well with the athlete thriving in what he describes as a low-pressure environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t expect to be at the Olympic Games at all,\u201d he said. \u201cMaking nationals for the first time in my first year was insane and then I was in the A final and I wouldn\u2019t be able to explain how I felt at that moment, I was petrified: I was in the lane next to Luke (Greenbank) and I was like it\u2019s Luke! But I\u2019d never been put in that situation before so it was a learning curve and then it was keep improving, things to work on and we just kept at it and here we are, never really stopped the progress and yeah, loving it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ollie Morgan Talks Rapid Progress, Nudging His British Record &amp;
